FIT TO TEACH COURSE

A Coaching course over six separate days for senior Pony Club Branch and Centre members, Associates and ex-members (ages 18 – 25yrs).  The course is aimed at young people who have attended at least a “Basic” Instructors’ or “Introduction to Pony Club Coaching” Course and preferably have done a little coaching for their branch, centre or elsewhere, are enthusiastic and keen to do more, and in the opinion of their D.C., Chief Instructor or Proprietor will be an asset to the Pony Club.

If current members they must hold at least part of their ‘B’ Test; if ex-members and over 21, they must be known by their Area Rep/D.C./Proprietor to have a thorough knowledge of correct Pony Club methods both in riding and pony care.

The course aims to produce coaches who are capable and confident coaching D, D+ and C level children, and who will not only impart knowledge, but do it safely and in a “fun” way.  The course at present covers the following, though this is subject to minor alteration:-

  1. Theory of coaching; what makes a good coach; use of visual aids, props and games
  2. Pony Club hierarchy – who to go to for help/back-up
  3. Risk assessment
  4. Accident book
  5. Child protection
  6. Teaching demonstration practice:

Assessment:  each student will be assessed in a “real life” coaching situation, both in riding and in care.  This is not a formality; the assessors have to be convinced that the student is capable of coaching this level of child unsupervised, safely, enjoyably, showing improvement and making them want to come again!
