Achievement Badge Day held on 3rd January 2007

On January 3rd 2007 at The Zetland Hunt Kennels we had a very well attended Achievement Badge Day, which was a good start to a new year.  There was a selection of badges members were trying for which included Care of the Foot, Tack Cleaning, Public Speaking, and 2 of the new Mini Badges for the younger members, of British Birds and Roadsense which we were starting for the first time.  Some did one badge, others managed four!  But we all had fun.

Care of the Foot was taken by Esther Veerman and contained knowledge of problems of the foot and care e.g. thrush, laminitis, corns and seedy toe.  Naming parts of the foot and recognise what is needed for daily care.

Tack Cleaning (that dreaded task no one seems to enjoy) was to be able to have knowledge of daily, weekly and yearly care, and check of tack.  Taking apart tack to clean and oil and a selection of different products used.  A subject we now have well covered with fun, and I expect to see amazingly clean and shiny tack at rallies, I will be looking!

Public Speaking was most entertaining as our older members gave a 2 minute speech on a badge they had attained, in front of us all.  This badge is designed to help aid candidates to speak clearly for Pony Club Tests.  Everyone did exceptionally well, even using visual aids, it was most rewarding to hear how you had all enjoyed doing the badges and the fun you had learning.

Roadsense, a new mini badge, tested by Lorraine Maudling, gave our members basic knowledge of safety and road-riding.  It was thoroughly enjoyed as you all demonstrated signals dressed in your fluorescent tabards, hat covers and gloves walking around the grounds as a group.

British Birds is always a very popular badge with plenty of colourful pictures and stories from Niki Trotter on our garden and sporting birds we see most often.

We also had a visit to the hounds to see them getting boxed up to go hunting that morning, and an informative talk from David our Huntsman.

Thank you to all members who took part and had revised the subjects and participated all so very well.  Also Thank You to our valuable volunteers who helped with refreshments and tidying up, etc.
