BADMINTON DRESSAGE – THE DAY ITSELF Wednesday 16th July 2008
We finally took a team of 3 Alfie Bradstock, Arabella Clegg and Gorgia Lisi plus 8 individuals Rebecca Gowing, Lucy Gowing, Abi Tudor, Rebecca Bell, Georgie Jones, Billie Parfitt, Lily Bradstock and Camille Saget. Ottilie Macpherson was due to come too but whilst her horse was fit and well she was on crutches so was there on all four feet to support. Everyone was beautifully turned out and it was fun to see them in their Old Berks jackets early in the morning when still cold. The weather was very different to last year and the sun shone nearly all day.
Alison had arrived from Ireland on Monday and had been putting them all through their paces to good effect. Although there were far fewer competitors in the individual competition there were 15 teams competing at a high level for the coveted position of competing in the indoor school in the ride off class. Our individuals were calm and collected and went through their tests with aplomb. Rebecca Bell (her first time representing the Old Berks and only 8 at that) and Georgie Jones (upping her place by 1 from last year) were 2nd and 4th respectively scoring in the 70s but the others were all close behind with respectable scores. The teams again were close and ours came in 7th earning themselves a very orange set of rosettes and a goody bag.
There was a five hour wait after our last team member performed until the ride off. This time was filled by watching the Young Dressage Horse of the Future Competition in the indoor school which was commentated on by Peter Holler from Germany and Isobel Wessels from GB. Gorgia who was our highest scoring team member was busy checking the lay of the land as to where she would be riding and wondering whether Penny would be fazed by the white railings and topiary. Those that hadnt been to the Pub for lunch (Bradstock contingent) ate their way through picnics and quantities of Celebrations (Abi) while Tom Lambert, who had come to support, and Alfie tucked into steaming mugs of hot chocolate filled with marsh mallows and whipped cream a true highlight. Whilst waiting for the 10 finalists to come in there was a call from Ottilie to say that they wanted us for Prize Giving back at the Arenas a 10 minute walk away. A buggy that was supposed to take 3 passengers was commandeered by 6 of us and we flew back with Alison literally hanging off the back. Arabella learnt to tie her own stock as she ran across the grass to get there! Not only did we miss Prize Giving but the Young Horse finalists too.
Gorgia did a lovely test in the ride off and came =7th which we were very proud of.
A very long day but well worth the effort by all the parents let alone the children. Well done to all of you who took part and who represented the Old Berks in fine style

RIBBONS ALL ROUND AT THE AREA 9 HORSE & PONY CARE COMPETITION!
Four teams went to the Area Competition on Saturday 12 April, hosted this year by the Cotswold at their kennels near Andoversford. The weather was wintery, but spirits were high as the two Junior teams went into the morning competition. Chloe Webster, Camille Saget and Sophie Oakland ('The Greys') and John Church, Jasmine Humphrey and Pauline Breakspear ('The Bays'), emerged after two and a half hours of questions and tasks on every aspect of horse care, looking a lot more cheerful than when they started. Their optimism was well placed: Chloe's team won, reclaiming the Area 9 Trophy for the third time in four years and qualifying for the Championships in August and, only a few marks behind, John's team came a well-deserved fourth.
In the afternoon, fortified by a mass picnic including hot soup and drizzle cake (well done, Chief Picnic Co-ordinator Katie Finch!) Johanna Marsden, Zoe Lloyd-Williams and Ottilie Macpherson ('The Fillies') and Verenique Beviere, Gorgia Lisi and Axie Finch ('The Foals') went off to do battle in the Senior Competition. Johanna's team were just pipped into 2nd place by the Ledbury and, hot on their heels, Verenique's team took 4th place.
Our senior teams deserve a special mention, especially Axie and Ottilie (both 14); they were the youngest of all the Seniors, competing against much older teams of 18, 19 and 20 year olds, all with B tests or higher. To be well placed amongst such experienced teams is a real achievement.
These are really great results! The standard in this competition gets a little higher each year and, with a place at the Championships at stake, it is very hotly contested. Ribbons are not easy to come by; all four teams trained hard through the winter and it was good to see their efforts so well rewarded.
Well done everyone,
Fiona Jack
TETRATHLON AND TRIATHLON
Good news on the Triathlon and Tetrathlon front over the past few months is that interest is increasing to the point where, at the Cotswold PC Triathlon at Cheltenham College Junior School on 29 March, the OBH was able to field a full Tadpole Team (Flora Insley, Archie Scott 8 years old on the day and Jack Church), 2 biathletes (Henry Insley and Katie Scott), one Junior (John Church) and one Senior (Emma Shayler). And there was success, with Henry taking 4th place and Katie 3rd (with their mixed Biathlon Team placing 3rd), Emma coming 6th in the Seniors, with her mixed team in 2nd and John placing 4th overall, with the best Junior Boys swim and his mixed team also 2nd. And the Tadpoles did well on their first outing as an OBH Team, not figuring in the rosettes but with Flora 9th girl, Archie 10th boy and a solid effort from Jack.
Since Christmas, OBH PC members have competed in 4 Triathlons, with excellent showings. At the VWH (Wroughton), we all competed as individuals:
Archie Scott 2nd (Biathlon) with best run.
Katie Scott 2nd (Biathlon) with best swim.
Jack Church 12th (Tadpole).
John Church 18th (Juniors).
And the adults embarrassed by the children but didnt disgrace themselves:
Fred Church 4th overall.
Jill Church 3rd swim and 3rd run (and raised £100 for Redwings Horse Sanctuary by running dressed as a donkey)!
At the Fitzwilliam, Oundle:
John Church 6th overall and 1st Team (Juniors).
Jack Church 12th overall and 6th Team (Tadpoles).
And at the South Berks at Hermitage, the regulars were joined by Flora and Henry Insley for their first triathlon. Despite terrible weather, we all had a good time. Henry Insley came 8th in the Biathlon and John Churchs mixed team came 6th in the Juniors.
Events in the near future are the Old Berkley, Chesham, on 19/20 Apr at which Emma Shayler and Flora Insley will be flying the OBH flag; the Fitzwilliam at Oundle on 3rd/4th May which should see John and Jack Church in action and the Whaddon Chase on 10/18 May which should see a good number as it will run both a Tetrathlon (both dates) and a Triathlon (on the 18th) something for everyone.
