Peter Hoblyn Cup.

PETER HOBLYN CUP.

The Peter Hoblyn Cup is a competition between local Pony Club Branches in which teams compete in Tack and Turnout, Dressage and Cross Country Riding.  The trophy is considered very prestigious in the area, and all Clubs compete strongly for the honour of winning the cup.

HISTORY.

Many of our members are unaware of the origins of the Peter Hoblyn Trophy.  Accordingly I have contacted Roma Cooke to find out a little more about this prestigious local competition.

The Trophy was originally awarded to try and improve the tack and turn out of local, young riders who did not like show jumping and who were not involved in other equestrian disciplines.  When the trophy was originally initiated, many children used to turn out with bridles held together with bits of string and binder twine.  The original aim of the competition was to raise awareness about turn out and rider safety.  Roma is trying to find out a little more of the history of the competition and we will endeavour to publish a bit more information later.

A report is presented below on a recent Peter Hoblyn success for North Cornwall Pony Club to give a flavour of what the competition involves.

PETER HOBLYN 2005

A Report From Two Of Our Competitors.

Be clean, be smart, be smiley they said.  A tall order considering the weather was wet, miserable and muddy!  With this in mind I mounted my pristine pony from the lorry door.  I Then walked a short distance to see Anna.  It was then the fun really started!

I came out from behind the trailer with my feet adorned in Tesco bags.  North Cornwall’s answer to a catwalk model (not quite]. Jack was not impressed by this and threw a fit of disbelief in the middle of the lorry park; narrowly missing a table covered with cakes and scrummy biscuits.  What a venue for a tea party!  I removed the bags and Jack came back to planet earth.

Whilst flying about, all I could think about were my white jodhpurs becoming not so white!

All assembled ready to go. Anna’s box of tricks, wet wipes (plus two very, very helpful mums) came in handy. We they trotted off to our tack inspection ……. Then Dressage.

This we had all been practicing, and after our best attempts finished with some amazing results.  Sarah (Charlie/s mum) walked us around the cross country course, and gave us lots of helpful tips.  I had doubts about the pimple.  Emma/after having a fit about plastic bags was wondering what Jack would make of the Chelsea flower jump at the end.  One by one the teams set off and we all had great fun.

All teams gathered in a horse shoe shape, mounted for prize giving.  We were overwhelmed to find out we’d won!  With great scores from Harriet Dance, Danni Babb, Sophie Gaskell, Charlie Tickle, Anna Robinson and Emma Harris.  We didn’t realize what we had accomplished, as the loudspeaker wasn’t working, so we couldn’t hear.

Finally we did our lap of honour, galloping across the field. Watching parents delve and leap for near by hedges.  With our rosettes floating in the wind.  A great way to end the day.
