Polocrosse comes to Cornwall!
The North Cornwall Hunt Branch of the Pony Club is hosting the Area 16 Polocrosse Competition on Sunday July 23rd to be held at Higher Hawksland Farm, St Issey, Wadebridge. This is the first time that Area 16 has run an Area Polocrosse Tournament, and it is being organised jointly with the Dartmoor Pony Club.
Polocrosse is a relatively new equestrian sport in this country, and particularly in the South West. As the name implies Polocrosse is a combination of polo and lacrosse. It was developed in Australia and is widely played there as well as in New Zealand, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It is also starting in several European Countries as well as in Britain. It is a team game on horseback and the object is to score goals. The team that scores the most goals is the winner. It is suitable for any horse or pony and rider, encouraging good horsemanship and team spirit. Unlike polo, players can only play one pony in the tournament, bringing the cost of playing within reach of the average club rider.
The North Cornwall Pony Club is very fortunate that Camel Valley Polocrosse , a group affiliated to Camel Valley Riding Club, is helping them in their new sport. Team Coach Andy Burgess has been extremely generous with his time and expertise in helping the children start to play this exciting game. We are also very fortunate to have the help and advice of club chairman Jon Webb, who has had a long career as a Polo and Polocrosse player and coach. Jon is going to be commentating on the tournament day, which will make the match more interesting for those new to the game.
Teams from the Dartmoor, South Devon Moorland, Tetcott and North Cornwall Pony Clubs will be competing. The day will start at 10 am. Spectators will be very welcome, refreshments available. Come and see this exciting sport first hand!
