Peter Hoblyn Competition ( September, 2007).

Peter Hoblyn Competition

North Cornwall Hunt Pony Club recently hosted the Peter Hoblyn Competition, which was held at Chyverton Park Equestrian Centre. This is a prestigious event held only for Cornish Pony Clubs and teams from Western, Four Burrow and North Cornwall Pony Clubs were entered this year.

The format of the Peter Hoblyn competition is a tack and turnout judging/assessment, followed by a dressage test and then a course of cross-country fences. There are strict guidance notes relating to the tack and turnout inspection and both the rider and horse’s presentation are closely scrutinised. All tack must be clean with no evidence of grease or dirt and it must comply with Pony Club Regulations. The horses must be presented clean and well groomed. Even the state and condition of the horses’ shoes and feet are assessed. The judges check the riders’ turnout closely penalising dirty boots, collars etc. In recognition of the importance of turnout there is a separate award for tack and turnout and it is a major achievement to take first place in this section. The deserved winners of this award were the Four Burrow Frisbees who were immaculately presented with 2 of their team not collecting any penalties. With some commendable remarks from the turnout judges the North Cornwall Hawks finished in 4th place. This young and relatively inexperienced team consisted of Heather Charlesworth (Blue Topaz), Anya Wilcox (Finnegan), Christie Rodgers (Just Incredible), Lucy Bruton (Lynchris Flyer) and Paige Trethewey (Golden Venture).

To decide the final placings for the Peter Hoblyn competition the teams’ performances in the 3 sections are collated and from each team of 6 members the scores of 3 are used to determine the results. Individual placings are also awarded. Solid clear cross-country performances by the North Cornwall Eagles following their good dressage marks earned them victory from the tack and turnout victors the Four Burrow Frisbees. The team of George Boisseau (Trevarth Tamsin), Izzy Kennan (Benoakes Valentine), Grace Stephens (Earl of Danesforth), Nicola Woodley (Darby Daydream), Emma Howard (Diptford Dreams of Glory) and Tamsin Moore (Trewolla Thunder) were delighted to take victory.

The North Cornwall members also achieved some excellent individual places with Emma Howard and Issy Kennan, both finishing in 2nd place in their arenas and George and Tamsin finishing in 3rd and 4th.

A big thank you to all parents and helpers who ensured the day ran smoothly.
