Pony Club Team Show Jumping (18th February, 2007).

During Half Term North Cornwall Pony Club sent 4 teams to contest the Dulverton West Pony Club’s Team Showjumping competition held at The Grange Equestrian Centre.

It was a great opportunity for some of the younger riders to compete as well as those who were just forging new partnerships with their ponies. The competition organised by the Dulverton West Pony Club was very well supported with teams from across Cornwall and Devon taking part. All 4 of our teams were excellently turned out with riders and ponies clean and tidy. A great deal of effort from both the children and their parents had been put into presentation and this was to be commended.

In the 12 years and under section both teams put in excellent rounds of jumping and finished on 0 penalties after competing over 2 rounds. The North Cornwall Terriers who consisted of Stacey Skelton (Tiptoes), Olivia Walton (Splashman), Christie Rodgers (Just Incredible), and Dominic Trethewey (Western Talisman) were exceptionally quick and were rewarded with a 3rd place. 19 teams contested the team competition and this was quite an achievement finishing behind a very experienced Tiverton Pony Club Team and the East Devon Yellow Team. Our younger team, North Cornwall Whippets were just outside the placings but thoroughly enjoyed their jumping. The team of Chloe Brown (Daisy), Eva Walton (Cassie), Bea McClardy (Pip) and Alice Stephens (Mr Chips) was possibly one of the youngest in this section but demonstrated their determination and competitive spirit as they showed some of the older riders how to negotiate the 2ft track.

Stacey and Tiptoes were also placed as individuals as they finished 2nd behind young BSJA competitor Tom Brain from Tiverton Pony Club. Stacey was delighted with her position as she was keenly supported by her family as well as Tiptoes’ ‘Mum’ Sally. Stacey and Tiptoes really attacked the 2nd round course and mastered a couple of very tight turns to produce the 2nd fastest clear round of the day.

All double clears were awarded rosettes to commemorate their achievements and North Cornwall members were proud as they also collected a number of these.

In the 14 years and under section both teams performed well with mixed fortunes. No team placings this time but there was some good riding by all of our members. For a number of combinations this was a learning experience and for Issy Kennan it was actually the first showjumping competition she had ever entered on Max!! This new partnership for Issy started well with a 5th place in the individual competition. A very unlucky 4 faults in the 2nd round unfortunately just prevented Shannon Fahey and Gorgeous George also being placed as an indivdual. Both the North Cornwall Greyhounds consisting of Shannon Fahey (Gorgeous George), Briony Eddy (Tia Lusso), Anya Wilcox (Finnegan) and Issy Kennan(Max) and the North Cornwall Foxhounds consisting of Nina Ball (Murphy), Nicola Woodley (Kitty Fisher), George Boisseau ( Trevarth Tamsin) and Issy Muir (Humbug) were excellent representatives of the Pony Club showing strong support for each other throughout the competition. It was also great to see these older members cheering on and applauding the younger children in the earlier class.

Congratulations to all those who took part and a big ‘thank you’ to all the supporters who were there to cheer on the North Cornwall members. Hopefully there will be further opportunities for team showjumping competitions and anyone interested please let me know.

Jenny Trethewey.
