Littleport & District Homepage

The Littleport & District Branch was established in 1970 and is part of Pony Club Area 8. Littleport & District is a very active branch, with over 100 members. We have many young members and we try to ensure that they not only enjoy their ponies but also understand the needs of their ponies.

We have rallies all year round, the winter rallies being at Milton Equestrian Centre.  These consist of one hour riding and one hour stable management and are held once a month on a Sunday. Riders work towards their next test. In the summer we also hold rallies, these have a different format, being held on a Friday and having no stable management- 1.5 hours riding instead.

We also undertake specialized rallies regularly - combined training, show jumping and cross country rallies. Members compete at local or area events - dressage, show jumping or eventing, often as members of a branch team.

The branch is not affiliated to a hunt, although some members do hunt with the West Norfolk, the Cambridge University Drag or the Cambridgeshire Harriers.

In addition to riding, there is instruction in all aspects of looking after horses, stable management classes forming part of the rallies, and many extra training sessions, usually with a badge or efficiency test in mind. Not all activities are so serious or involve ponies directly; there are quiz evenings (and we have sent teams to compete at interbranch and area level) as well as social activities like barbeques, trips to Wembley etc.

But the main events of the year are undoubtedly the summer camps - there is one for seniors (10 - 21) and one for juniors. The seniors camp in tents for a whole week, with their ponies in temporary stables. They ride much of each day, receive instruction on a variety of pony or country related subjects and have to be 100% responsible for their ponies. A swimming trip, football, a disco and barbeque add to the experience. The junior camp takes place over three days, and neither the children nor the ponies stay overnight. Nonetheless it is much enjoyed and always over-subscribed.

Naturally many members make friends in the club who then go hacking or competing together.

The Pony Club is the number one organisation for young people who love ponies and riding. There are more than 43,000 Pony Club Members in Great Britain, belonging to either a Branch or a Centre - there are more than 350 of each of these. Membership of The Pony Club offers fun, friendship, training, events and competitions.

Internationally The Pony Club has a membership of over 110,000 across 18 countries, making it the largest association of riders in the world. Most British equestrian medal winners at The Olympics and World Championships have been Members of The Pony Club.
