Tetrathlon

What is Tetrathlon?

Do you enjoy cross country riding?

Can you Swim ?

Can you Run ?

Can you Shoot ?

Or are you interested in learning to do any of these ?

If so you may be interested in coming along and having a go at tetrathlons.

Not sure what this entails – well read on :-

What is Tetrathlon? - It is a Pony Club competition combining Cross-Country riding with running, shooting and swimming. It is open to boys and girls of all ages, in teams or as individuals. Children under 8 years old are not able to shoot in competition, but are welcome to enter for the other disciplines.

During the winter months we enter Triathlons (shooting, swimming and running) which keeps us fit !

The tetrathlons / triathlons are run in age groups

All ages are at 1st January

Minis – Under 12

Juniors – Under 15

Seniors – Under 25

Shooting – Minis  hold the gun in both hands, and shoot at a distance of 7m. Juniors shoot single handed at a distance of 7m, and seniors shoot single handed at 10m.

Ten shots are taken, with a maximum possible score of 1000.

Running - A timed run is completed of either 1000m ( minis) or 1500 (juniors and senior girls) , or 3000m ( senior boys); the faster you run, the more points you get!

Swimming - Each competitor swims for 2 minutes ( minis), 3 minutes (juniors and senior girls) , or 4mins  ( senior boys) and points are given for the distance achieved.

In tetrathlon only, there is a fourth phase:

Riding - A cross-country course must be completed, with obstacles such as slip-rails and gates as well as jumps, including a water complex.

Points for each phase are added to give a total. Prizes are given to individuals and to teams of three or four.

TEAMS

We have a very successful Senior girls team comprising Lucy Cocker, Kate Hastings, Helen Sear who won the Area 6 competition last year and went to the National Championships.

Lucy was also selected to represent Area 6 at the UK inter area competition which was held in Ireland last year.

Do you like the idea of having a go ?

Most of you will have done some running and swimming at school, but have not perhaps had the opportunity to shoot. If you fancy having a go at shooting please contact Liz Lovell in the first place.

We are hoping to arrange some training for cross country running in the next few weeks when the evenings start to get a bit lighter. We will update the activities page with dates of training sessions.

TETRATHLON is one of the most sociable Pony Club events, so even if you aren't particularly sporty, please come along and have a go.

TETRATHLON DATES 2008

Please find below all the Area 6 Tetrathlon dates for 2008.

There may be other dates in adjacent areas but Liz will inform everyone about those as and when they are available.

BARLOW QUALIFY FOR OPEN GIRLS TETRATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS

What a weekend – At the Quorn Tetrathlon this weekend, the Barlow Girls Senior team – Lucy Cocker, Helen and Clair Sear were in a qualifying position, however, due to a technicality, Helen needed to complete a further qualifying round on Finney within the next two weeks. As luck would have it, all the Sear family were off on holiday early this week and Helen realised that it would be near impossible. Disappointingly she had to withdraw, which allowed 5 individuals to go to the Championships – including both Lucy and Clair. This was a very sporting decision of Helen, who I know will be disappointed as she has trained exceedingly hard this year, as well as studying hard for her A levels. We wish Lucy and Clair all the best for the championships and I know that Helen will be there cheering her sister and Lucy on – and partying with them too !!   This will be Lucy’s third time at the Championships – a fabulous achievement.

Lucy came 2nd in the qualifying competition and Claire came 5th.

The other competitors did fantastically well too. In the Mini Boys triathlon competition Ben Patrick came 5th, having won the run, with a PB of 880 points.

In the Under 9’s Tetrathlon, Tom Patrick came 3rd – with good scores in all phases and his best ride this year. In the Mini boys section, Conor Dubik ran an amazing 3 minutes 50 seconds ( a PB of 1060 points) which we all thought would be best run – but he was narrowly beaten. Conor came 8th overall – In the team competition he and Tom were in a joint team with the Cottesmore and came third.

In the junior competitions, Katie Patrick performed well in all sections and rode a lovely round on Jenny over a technical course and her team finished 5th overall. David Lovell won the swim in the junior boys section and finished 4th.

Tetrathlon competitors really are a friendly bunch – why don’t you give me a ring to arrange some shooting practice and join our teams ? There is now a bit of a break from branch competition until the autumn so it would be a really good time to join us and get some training before we start again in the autumn. Triathlon competitions are run all through the winter – so it is a great way to keep fit and to keep in touch with friends from other branches too.

WEST & NORTH NORFOLK TETRATHLON

Conor and David were selected to represent Area 6 in the recent Mini / Junior Inter Area competition. We all had a fun weekend camping ( why didn’t someone tell me that you need tent pegs as well as a tent ??) and William and Mud enjoyed their holiday in a lovely paddock too. Our campsite was only a few minutes’ walk from the sea front and despite the erratic weather over the rest of the weekend we managed to eat fish and chips on the sea front on a glorious Saturday evening.

Despite having been up before the crack of dawn, both boys swam brilliantly on the Saturday and both were in 3rd place in their respective sessions going into the second day. David shot 900 ( his personal best) and finished in 10th place overall.  ( Team 2nd)  Conor  came 2nd in the run & rode a lovely clear round on William to finish in 5th place- the mini boys team won the Inter Area.

The pictures show the boys with their Area 6 team mates.

More Fantastic results from the Barlow Tetrathletes

South Trent Arena Tetrathlon – 14/15 June

This was a Tetrathlon with a difference – the riding phase took place at Vale View Equestrian Centre, and consisted of a challenging outdoor  show jumping course, with lots of coloured fillers and combinations, followed by an indoor cross country course ( timed for the juniors and seniors). In the junior girls section Katie Patrick, riding Jenny in their first tet, rode a faultless SJ round, and determined not to get any time penalties in the X_C phase  just tipped fence 2 and incurred 30 penalties, in a very fast time. Katie, gave a strong performance against very fierce competition and finished just out of the ribbons. In the mini boys section, Conor rode a fantastic clear round – the only one in his section, and took the best run, with a total of 4028 points he deservedly won his section. Tom Patrick won the tadpole boys ( U9’s) and also won the best shoot in his section.

South Notts and Belvoir Tetrathlon – 21/22 June

The Barlow tetrathletes all came home with rosettes this weekend, and a number of Personal Bests.

The X_C course was very technical and challenging for all the sections – with the exception of the mini girls ( some good riders here for the future) there were only one or two clear rounds in any of the sections. The running course was daunting to say the least  - it was over the X_C course and included two jumps ! Conor set off at a cracking pace and seemed to come back even faster, and Ben Patrick was third in his section’s run – he was competing against some boys who are nearly three years older than him, so this was a fantastic achievement.

Helen Sear, was in the third placed senior girls team, and achieved a PB in her swim. Natalie Kent was in the 4th

placed junior girls team and also achieved a PB in her

swim. David Lovell was 3rd in the junior boys – his PB was

in the shoot. Conor Dubik kept up the standard he has set

himself this year, winning the mini boys section with a

fabulous total score of 4050, his PB was for swimming he

was also in the winning team. In the tadpole boys, Tom

Patrick gave a solid performance in all four phases and

finished 6th , his team coming 2nd. Ben Patrick shot an

incredible 820 in only his 2nd triathlon competition to

finish 4th overall.

Well done to all of you

Cottesmore Tetrathlon 25/26 May 2008

The Barlow contingent was somewhat depleted due to parents choosing to take the competitors to various parts of Europe for a holiday, but Lucy Cocker and Conor Dubik flew the flag for Barlow, and both performed brilliantly. Lucy won the Open Girls section, and also won the run section, to finish with 3744 points overall. Conor swam a personal best (920 points) and finished in 5th position on 3882 points. Well done to both of you.

BARLOW/MEYNELL TETRATHLON REPORT FROM LIZ

See pictures below.

The third joint Tet / Tri run by Barlow and Meynell Hunt Pony clubs took place over the weekend 26/27th April.

The Cross country phase was held at Keddleston Hall on Saturday – and the course rode extremely well. This was the first Tetrathlon in Area 6 this year and Barlow entered 6 competitors. In the senior girls competition Lucy Cocker rode Hugo and performed a lovely clear round, putting them in the joint lead. In the junior girls, Natalie Kent rode Maggie really well to finish with 964 points and in their first junior competition Katie Patrick and Surf had just one stop to finish on 1308 points( 8th) . David Lovell managed to complete the course on an uncooperative Blue although unfortunately ended with no points. In the mini boys Conor Dubik rode William beautifully and went clear meaning they started Sunday in the joint lead, and Tom Patrick rode Tilly determinedly to finish with 1140 points, in 5th position. The sunny warm weather made it a good day for competitors, spectators and jump judges alike just before the rain started  and although a couple of the bigger lorries had to be helped off the field with a tractor most competitors managed to leave just before the rain started  !!

On Sunday the Triathlon phase was held at Repton School.

The Barlow contingent all performed well and all of them achieved a 2008 personal best in at least one discipline.

Lucy came 2nd in the senior girls section – with a personal best total score of 4040 points – only 18 points behind the overall winner. Lucy shot 800 (3rd) and swam 8 lengths 16m to score 964 points in the swim(2nd)  – both PBs this year. Lucy along with Laura Thornton of the Fernie and Rebecca Lewis of the Cottesmore were the winning team.

Juniors

Natalie, in her first competition this year shot a very respectable 760, and ran and swim well to finish 15th overall. Katie shot 760 and achieved a PB in her swim (902 points) and finished 12th overall. They were in a team with Lilly Hives and Amelia Power of the Cottesmore which finished 5th.

David Lovell shot 780 (2nd)  and swam 7 lengths 1m (2nd, and 956 points) both PBs which went someway to making up for the disappointment of Saturday’s XC and finished 4th.

Minis

Conor shot 740, swam 4 lengths 12m (3rd, 896 points) and was in third position after 3 phases. Conor ran brilliantly and finished in 3 mins 55 seconds to gain 1030 points and storm into the winning position. Conor gained PBs in both the swimming and running.

Tom Patrick shot 800 (3rd) and swam a PB of 3 lengths 11m to score 688 points, a really good run ( 820 points) saw him hold onto his 5th place in the mini competition and take 2nd place in the under 9s (mini-mini) section.

The two boys were in the winning team with Tom Fletcher and Joseph Thirlby of the Atherstone.

 TRIATHLON

We took two Triathletes to the competition.

Juniors

Unfortunately Lotz Wilson had an injury meaning she was unable to run, and she finished in 2nd place. Her swim of 4 lengths 19m (614) points was a PB.

Minis

Taking part in his first ever triathlon, now that he is old enough to shoot Ben Patrick was a welcome addition to the Barlow team. He shot 600, swam well (448 points) and started his run promising to give his elder brother a run for his money – and he did. He set off at a cracking pace which he kept up nearly all the way round finishing 2 seconds faster than Tom to gain 832 points. This was the fastest run in the mini-mini section and finished 6th overall.

Well done to all the competitors – you were all a credit to Barlow PC, all the swimming and running training – thanks Ollie  - is paying off.

A very big “thank you” to Faith Egan and Louise Williams for organising such a well run event, and to all the mums, dads, grandparents and siblings who willingly gave their time to  jump judge, tack check, invigilate the shooting, lane walk the swimming , and supervise the swimming. All the competitors really appreciate this and understand that without your help there wouldn’t be any competitions to take part in.

QUORN TRIATHLON RESULTS 30/3/08.

Six Barlow Triathletes travelled to Ratcliffe College on Sunday for the Quorn Hunt Triathlon. The weather this year was almost perfect, it was sunny with a mild breeze unlike last year when we had horizontal rain, and despite losing an hours sleep due to the start of British Summer Time they all arrived in good time.  The running course looked great, but there were a few dangerously slippery sections, which caught out a few of the early competitors, including our own Tom Patrick, who despite slipping over on the final corner, thereby losing a few seconds, came 3rd in the mini mini boys section. Conor Dubik ran fantastically as usual (3rd ) and achieved a personal best in his swim to finish 6th in the mini boys. In the junior girls, Katie Patrick gave another solid performance to finish in the middle of the class – some of these junior girls are fantastic athletes and the competition is fierce, and Lotz Wilson shot a fantastic 860 in only her second ever competition – this was the 2nd highest score in the class. David Lovell shot and swam well ( 3rd in each discipline) and finished 5th in the junior boys. Lucy Cocker won the senior girls section, and also took Best run, and best swim.

The Barlow team are making a name for themselves this year and are all turning in consistently good performances, improving on their own performances as the season progresses.  Well Done to you all.

Our next outing is our own Barlow / Meynell Tetrathlon – on 26th/27th April. It would be fantastic if we could include more competitors from Barlow – so that we have teams in each class – If anyone wants to have a go, please give Liz a ring. There is also a Triathlon, if you and your pony don’t fancy the X_Country section – although there will be plenty of “L” fences to give everyone something to jump.

MIDDLETON HUNT EAST TRIATHLON

On Sunday 16th March The Barlow Tetrathlon team, travelled to Driffield Sports Centre to take part in the Middleton Hunt East Triathlon. Middleton Hunt are part of Area 3 and made us very welcome.

All of our team members performed well – and some new personal bests were achieved. Lucy Cocker, David Lovell, and Katie Patrick  all ran their fastest times ever. Conor Dubik and Katie shot higher scores than previously, and both also achieved PBs in their swim.

Results

Lucy Cocker and Helen Sear were in the 2nd placed Open Girls team, and Lucy took 4th place as an individual.

Katie Patrick and Lotz Wilson were in the winning Junior Girls team, and Katie took 4th place as an individual.

David Lovell was 3rd in the Junior boys section, and was part of the winning team.

Conor Dubik was 3rd in the Mini boys section, won the prize for the fastest run, and was part of the winning team.

Tom Patrick was 4th in the Mini –min boys section, and was part of the winning team.

Congratulations to you all – especially Lotz as this was the very first triathlon she had entered.

The team have entered for the Quorn Tri at the end of the month, and are all looking forward to that.

Our own Tetrathlon / Triathlon takes place at the end of April – see the news pages for further details. If you would like to enter this, please send the Tet/ Tri  slip in to me so that I can let you know about training sessions.
