Pony Racing

More details can be found on the Charles Owen pony Racing web site: http://www.charlesowen.co.uk/pony racing which is currently being updated for this season.

To race in 2008 there are a number of rule changes.

Riders have to members of the Pony Racing Authority (subscription  is £20 and forms available from their web site http://www.pra.gb.com)

Ponies have to have height measurement certificates issued by the Joint Measurement Board.  There are a limited number of vets who are registered to do these and there is a fee.  To get a height certificate the pony has to be unshod and usually you have to take the pony to the registered vet.  Details can be found on the web site of the JMB.

Ponies must be aged 5-20.  Two height classes 136 cm -138 cm (approx 13.2 and under) and 146 cm – 148 cm (approx 14.2 and under).  Ponies must have valid vaccinations certificates and passports.

Riders (for Point to Point Pony Racing) 9-15 on the day (slightly different for other pony races).  There is no minimum weight for riders for Pony Racing at Point to Points but for races held at race courses there is a minimum weight of 8 stone with saddle. Riders must have medical armband, approved riding hat and body protector. Bridle reins must be stitched or buckle not stud or billet. There are other rules regarding tack on the Charles Owen web site.

To qualify to race you should have attended four Pony Club rallies, or four hunt meetings since 1 October 2007.  Your entry form has to be signed either by the Master or Secretary of the Hunt or the DC or Secretary of the Pony Club.

So, if you are thinking of racing this season now is the time to not only think about complying with all the formalities but to start getting your pony fit.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RACING AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE CONTACT ME: Sue Farran on email: s.e.faran@dundee.ac.uk
