Fife Hunt Pony Club - Sprot Cup 28th December 2005 at DABBS

Once again the venue of DABBs was much appreciated as all outdoor riding activities on the day were impossible due to very wintery weather conditions.  However, despite unsalted snowy and icy roads many ponyclubbers were undeterred, coming from as far afield as Aberfeldy and the Angus glens to try and wrest the Sprot Cup from Fife Hunt Pony Club.  Strathearn Pony Club reaped the rewards from lots of enthusiastic help from Will Murray, one of their senior members and a national level JRN competitor, as well as a lot of early morning phone calls to get everyone to turn out.  This was particularly rewarding for Stephanie O’Neil who won her own class by a clear 10 seconds, as well as the Dengie Qualifier.  This class was held for the first time as part of the Sprot Cup day.  It was very competitive, with only 2 seconds separating the first three and six seconds between the first seven, so that the four qualifying slots were well earned.  The Keith family also had a good day with their pony Gambit, who took Class 3 with Freddie and then went on with sister Emily to win the Open, this combination are the current Area 1 Dengie winners.  Strathearn led Fife on points by 37 to 34 before the last class, but Fife had a heavy number advantage at the senior end of this competition so the final result swung convincingly Fife’s way to allow them to hold on the Sprot Cup at the end of the day.

October Competitions.

We had lots of members out at Fishcross on Sunday 23rd for the first indoor team jumping competition run by Glenrothes Pony Club.  The day started well with the Nursery Novice team of Maeve Weldon, Jack Crawford, Emma Cheape and Gemma Christie coming 3rd out of 11 teams.  In the Novice competition the team of Kirsty McEwen, Jennifer Shaw, Gillian Russell and Catherine Shaw came 6th while the other Fife team also did creditably to finish on a total of 8 faults, they were Scott Drysdale, Lauren McKinney, Sam Smith and Laura Donaldson.  In the Intermediate section the Fife Flyers of Alastair, Lucy Henry and Jenny Drysdale were 5th with the Stargazers of Lucy Moffat, David L and Emma C hard on their heels.  The best was saved till last when our open team were the only ones to finish on a zero score to win their section.  Well done to Alice, Poppy, Sarah and Helen.  Particular congratulations to Jack Crawford, Emma Cheape, Kirsty McEwen, Gillian Russell, Scott Drysdale, Sam Smith, Lucy Mofffat, Alice Drysdale, Poppy Open and Sarah Sandison who all did double clears on the day - you can't do better than that, - well almost, Sarah was also the fastest in the Open, so was the individual section winner as well.  What a pity they can't all go out again on the 30th to repeat the successes.

West Perthshire PC held their novice one-day-event on Saturday 1st October.  This was enjoyed among others by some Cheapes, Harleys and Georgina Black.  Georgina won her class, Rosie Keith won the dressage on Dixie and was 7th overall on her, then 9th on Flick.  Emily was 2nd on Gambit and 7th on Storm.

The following day Angus PC held their huntertrial at Auchlishie.  Here Camilla Balfour was second in the 3'6", and in the 3' class Lorna won and Ross Hood was second

Georgina was our only member to travel to Angus PC on the 16th October, for their Combined training competition.  She did well to come 4th in the 10 and under class.

Games.  Some hardy souls braved the not very nice weather for a fun afternoon of games at Balcormo on Saturday 22 October.  The results were:   7 and under 1st Louise Howat;   9 and under 1st Katherine Lindsay, 2nd Nicola Howat, 3rd Gemma Christie, 4th Louise Howat;  10-12 years 1st Aileen Rodwell, 2nd Caitlin Wood, 3rd Jamie Struthers, 4th Lauren McKinney;  Over 12yrs 1st   Alastair McKinney, 2nd Jenny Drysdale, 3rd Lucy Moffat, 4th Kirsty McEwen.

Thanks to all the helpers who helped put the jumps away for the winter.  The Horse Pshycic also had a busy afternoon and talked to quite a few of our friends with some very illuminating results.  If you would like more information get in touch with Debbie Haig.

Craigie One-day-event.  Fife Riding Club were very congenial hosts for their 40th Anniversary One-day-Event on Sunday 19th September.  A lot of our members had a good day, especially in the Junior Open where Louise Peddie won the dressage, then we had a 1-2-3 overall from 1st Lucy Eccles, 2nd Lorna Balfour and 3rd Alice Drysdale.  Camilla Balfour was second to ex-member Heather McLaren in the Senior Open, and Gillian Osler on Amber also went clear cross-country in their class.  Sarah Cunningham was 2nd on Sherry in the Young Riders Novice.

Dalkeith & District PC ODE was attended by the Keith family, where Rosy was third in her class and Emily was 3rd and 5th and had a successful new brake testing outing.

Success for our Show Jumping members:  Helen and Louise both went down to the Scope Festival in Staffordshire and had a great week of showjumping. There were 250 in Helen`s first class so it was quite an eye-opener !!  Helen`s best result was coming 7th out of a class of 150. Louise got a double clear in the British Novice just wasn't quick enough, however she got placed in the 1m progressive coming 29th out of 268 competitors.An excellent result for her.

Helen had an unforgettable time at the Scottish Home Pony International in Lanark. She did a fast double clear in the "Newcomers" and won the class beating 45 other riders, many of whom were from England or Ireland.  Louise also had also had a great time at Home pony being placed in 3 classes all with entries of 100 and above. The ponies are now having a well earned break.

Report on the Pony Club Championships Eventing.  After all the excitment at Burgie we found out that we had qualified to go to Sansaw. After a long journey- and a few wrong routes- we arrived at Sansaw and went to put our horses in their stables. Unfortunately Vicki White had to withdraw from the team at the last minute but luckily Lucy Henry was able to come instead with Tequila Sunrise (Tilly). After a lot of course walking with Sarah we all hoped for the best. Wills and Market Trend did a brilliant dressage, super XC and better than usual SJ to come 8th individually but later found out that if he had gone double clear he would have come 2nd. Me (Camilla) and Ogo Pogo did not expect much but were amazed when we did a Double Clear in the SJ and XC finishing 21st individually. Emily and True Gambit did their best dressage yet but unfortunately the brakes were faulty and she did not complete the XC.  The cruise control was stuck in 5th gear!! Lucy and Tequila Sunrise were having a fantastic and fast XC round until they got to the water complex where she had a stop. In the SJ Lucy took a wrong turn and took the scenic route before realising her mistake and had to hurdle the last two jumps to finish on 4 faults without any time faults!! It was a wonderful experience and many thanks must go to our taxi service who ferried us down to Sansaw and to our grooms who brushed, plaited, mucked out and tacked up our horses!!  by Camilla Balfour

Pony Club Novice Championships 2005

A happy band of six set off for the Pony Club National Novice Championships in Cheshire full of hope.  The Drysdale lorry was full with four of the best 14.2 pony club ponies around – namely Snips, Puzzle, Kez and Jemma along with their jockeys Caitlin Macrae, Alastair McKinney, Alice Drysdale and Lorna Balfour.  These four made up the dressage team, the other two of Lucy Eccles (hot off a plane from Spain) and Vanessa who had been kept fit by sister Katie, and David Lawrie (also 2005 winning Scottish Junior Tetrathlon team member) with Tienchi were in the Novice Eventing team along with Alastair and Lorna who had a busy week-end doubling in the dressage followed by the eventing on Sunday.  All the dressage took place at the same time in four arenas side by side, so that it was only possible to watch one test completely.  They all did lovely tests in a competition where the judges reported that the standard had been very high.  There were forty-one teams entered, so also forty one individuals in each class.  Alice was fifth individually and Caitlin was 11th individually, and the final team placing was 14th overall, a very creditable performance from our first ever dressage representatives at these championships.

That afternoon the course for the cross-country the following day was walked by everyone.  None of the jumps were big or difficult on their own, but the rolling country-side, hedges and combination of the different jumps gave everyone lots to think about, a very true contemporary “eventing” cross-country test.  The dressage started well with Vanessa and Lucy doing a top ten placed test, and the others were all good as well.  However the cross-country didn’t go so well, there were a lot of eliminations throughout the competition, and Lorna was our only completion, but Alastair and Lucy completed the whole course, although Tienchi called it a day three quarters of the way round.  They were all allowed to complete the show-jumping in another undulating arena, so were able to finish on a high note.  Everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the experience at this lovely well-run competition, with a great pony club atmosphere.  The parents were very pleased that they were then able to get home in the light rather than the late night drive they had been anticipating, so that school the next day was not quite such a challenge!

Interbranch 2005

We did it – Open and Intermediate Event, Novice Dressage and 1 Open Show jumper all qualify for the Championships – best Interbranch for years – very well done everyone.  --  Now read on.

A group of 50 odd parents and members and family set off to Burgie for three days of  competition at Novice and Open level for Area 1 Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing.  Fife had a great time, everybody without exception, performing brilliantly.  On Tuesday we started off with the Novice Dressage competition.  This team qualified for the National Championships so were thrilled at that.  The team were Alice Drysdale and Meikle Kestrel (7th), Caitlin Macrae and Snips (2nd), Alastair McKinney and Puzzle (6th) and Lorna Balfour and Gemma (6th), and the individuals were Lucy Eccles and Vanessa (9th), and David Lawrie and Tienchi (12th).

The next day was the Show Jumping.  The Novice team of Emma Coyle and Fibi, Ross Hood and Spot On, Nicole and Prince, and Alice Drysdale on My Amanda were 6th out of 17 teams, this was much the biggest entry out of the different interbranch sections.  Meanwhile the individuals of Jenny Drysdale on Josh and Lorna (I’ll show you what happens if you don’t put me in the team!) Balfour both did clear first rounds, with Lorna going on to double clear and winning the competition as first individual from 80 entries.  Well done Lorna.  The Open Dressage team of  Wills Oakden, Nicole Spittle, Emma Lawrie and Vikki White all did nice tests to finish as 6th placed team.

The Open Show Jumping Team were competing at the same time in the adjacent arena, however with a disappointing entry of only 31 participants and seven teams entered.   This didn’t detract from the excitement over a tricky course with full use being made of the slight gradient of the arena at Burgie.  The team was Nikki McRobbie and Cally, Helen Summersgill and Robin’s Quest, Emma Lawrie and Lizzie, Louise Christie and Sparkling Irish Mist.  Louise was the star of the first round with a brilliant clear, and they all did great second round for the team to finish a very close third overall, after much nail-biting and checking of the scores.  The best result of the lot came the next morning when we learnt that Helen, who had done a very consistent two rounds of four faults a piece to come fourth individually, had been passed the envelope giving her an invitation to compete and the Pony Club Championships at Sansaw.

We all had a great party on the Wendesday evening where Caroline McLeod was presented with a specially commissioned picture by “Loon” to mark her retirement as Area 1 Representative.

On Thursday it was an early start for the Eventers.  The Novice Team was David Lawrie, Lucy Eccles, Alastair McKinney and  Lorna Balfour, with Emma Coyle and Ross Hood going individually.  They had a long day, but reward came in the end with 19 teams forward, Fife won the competition.  They had all gone well across country, only carrying one stop forward to the final score on top of good show-jumping an dressage which was good enough to win the competition, so they will join the dressage team at the Novice Championships.  In this competition, the cross-country had taken a big toll of the competitions.

The opposite was true of the Open Event competition where the Show Jumping was the critical factor with only 3 faultless show-jumping rounds.  Our team were Wills Oakden on Market Trend (George), Emily Keith on Gambit, Camilla Balfour on Pogo and Vicky White on Imane Des Sources (Eno).  They were second by 0.25 penalties, so they were all going through the “if-only’s” like crazy, however nothing could take away from a brilliant team performance by all everyone, with all four round the cross-country clear.   Vicki was fourth individually and has qualified to go down to the Championships.  Lucy Henry was our individual in this competition doing only her second 3’6” Open Event, but she joined the other four to finish with a brilliant clear cross-country round and a performance to be proud of.  |It was not until two days later that the phone call came through to say that the winning team of Deveron had pulled out, so Fife have now taken the qualifying position and the whole team will now be travelling down to Sansaw along with Vikki.

A huge thanks to Sarah Oakden and Lisa Hood who travelled with the team and looked after the teams for us.  Also to Catherine, Gwen and Chris who were a huge support, and kept on their toes with all the scoring, timing, cheering and general hand-holding that went on.

Junior One-Day-Event Pratis 7 August 2005 Click Here Click here to view the Results of Montrave One-day-Event, 30th July 2005

The Junior One-day-Event was held for the first time at Pratis on Sunday 7 August.  Susie Miller was the very generous and helpful host, nothing was too much trouble, so a huge thank you to her.  The day was a great succes at the new venue, with only a few teething problems to be sorted out for another year, if Susie will have us.  The cross-country was challenging for the children, with problems spread over the course.  There were also a good bunch of double clear rounds by the young event riders.  The Fife trophies were won by Georgina Black on Cherry Pie and Colleen Macrae on Woodrow Snips.   Lucy Harley was second and Joanne Forrester was third placed Fife members in the 10yrs and under.  The overall winner of that section also had a Fife connection as the pony was Robin, recently sold by the Balfour family to Jenny Gumley of Linlithgow and Stirling Pony Club.  In the 12 and under, Colleen Macrae was successful overall on Snips, with Ross Hood second, a good warm up for him for interbranch this week.  Another ex-fife pony "Charlie" the Eriskay was third overall in that class.  The full results can be seen by clicking on the link above.

Games - A team from Fife ventured for the first time to the Home Pony International Show at Lanark on Saturday 6th August.  This was a great competition with 12 games, and lots of fun different ones from the annual Prince Philip Games competition set, so that was much enjoyed by the team of Lucy, Alastair, Jenny and Lauren who was stepping up to the senior team for the first time.  Kirkintilloch & Campsie kindly lent us a 5th member for a couple of the games, but otherwise everyone counted.  They surprised the organiser, but not perhaps themselves, by coming 4th.  This show is a qualifier for the Scottish Horse of the Year Show at Gleneagles, and although the first five go through, we discovered it was only the Sunday's results that counted, and Fife returned to support our Junior Event and Letham Show for the Sunday - so, next year .... will they claim their place!?  Well done everyone.

Results from Strathallan Event:  Sarah Sandison was 8th in the Pre-Novice Championship for Scotland, well done her.  Vikki White was 5th in the Intermediate Novice on her interbranch team horse, and last but not least Lisa a well-kent face at camp was 2nd in her Intro section.

East Lothian ODE:  Well done to Gabi Wolf who followed up her 2nd place at Fife with a 3rd at Tyningham in the Open 3' class.  Sadly school trips have taken her and Sarah S away to exciting foreign parts over the interbranch dates.

Tetrathlon.   A few members went to Auchlishie for the Scotland and the Borders Tetrathlon competition on Thursday and Friday 28/29 July.  Mike Harley won his section, reversing the placings with Jamie Struthers from interbranch. David Lawrie was beaten into second place again, but enjoys a real needle competition with Jack McRoberts for the Junior Boys Tetrathlon honours in Scotland.

Jumpcross was tried for the first time by some of our members at a select session at Strathearn Eventing with Sarah Houlden.  They had some tuition from Sarah and then completed the full length cross-country length course of 2'6" jumpcross jumps including a water splash, style, bank, ditch .... and joker fences.  The results of the day were 1st Lauren McKinney, 2nd, Jamie Struthers, 3rd Alastair Mckinney on his new horse, 4th Lynsay Drysdale, 5th Scott Drysdale and 6th Jemma Christie.  Well done everyone.

The week-end of 11/12 June was a very busy week-end for lots of our members in all sorts of disciplines.  The children who do Games had a particularly full week-end of activities.  The senior team of Alastair, Jenny, Rebecca, Lucy M, and Caitlin did us proud at Angus show where 6 teams competed in a fast and furious competition, with the top 4 teams all scoring over 50 points and coming within 6 points of each other.    Fife won a couple of the races and were well placed in many others so that at the end Fife tied for 3rd place with Angus, but finished fourth after the run-off.  Strathearn (who we beat at the Area competition) won the competition with Eglinton in second position.  All this was achieved despite missing out one race entirely because poor Caitlin was knocked to the ground by an enthusiastic Dixie in the 3-legged sack race, so had to get medical attention.  The nasty fall was made up for by the crowd giving her the best cheer of the day when she got up in one piece, if a bit batterred.  Past fife games players will be impressed to hear that they were 3rd in the large sack!  The team, minus Rebecca, plus Freddie then went to Doune to join the rest of their families and lots of other pony club games teams for the second day of the games week-end.  Here the juniors of Lauren, Rosy, Freddie (honorary member) and Daniel Wood finished first in their section - a photo of their winning charge is on the games page of this web site.  The seniors were again beaten by Strathearn into second place in their section, and a mention must be made to Jamie S who did brilliantly to join a Strathearn team for the week-end where he and Puffin thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were thrilled to be presented with a T-shirt by them at the end.

Meanwhile we had representatives at the Balkello X-country competition.  Ruth Elliot and Rebecca Headon (also Mum Ann on Woody) all went clear, while Louise Christie was second in Class 2.  In the 10 and under Georgina Black won with Lucy Harley third, good rounds were also completed by Jemma Christie and Emma and Sarah Cheape.

Fife Riding Club had a Show Jumping show.  Class 8 was won by Colleen Macrae on Snips,.  Lynsay Drysdale had a great day out finishing up by winning her very first Open Show jumping competition, she had warmed up well by coming 5th in the Intermediate, 4th in the Novice and 4th in the Nursery Novice.  Meanwhile brother Scott was 6th in the Novice.

Week-end of 4/5 June

West Perthshire Huntertrials 5 June.  2' Class 1st Jamie Struthers, 3rd Rosy Keith on Dixie.  Georgina Black was clear in the 1'6" class and there were nice rounds from the Cheapes, Harleys, Jemma Christie and Freddie Keith.

Tetrathlon.  Rosy Lucy and David Lawrie have been representing Scotland in the international tetrathlon competition in Northern Ireland over this week-end.  David was second, more news to follow shortly.  Eventing.  Mary Drysdale was 3rd in the Novice at Scotsburn.

Interbranch 2005 - Saturday 21 May

The teams had a very rare sunny day for this year’s Interbranch games.  Although there were a few very light rain showers, the day was enjoyed by all.

We had two senior teams entered.  The ‘A’ team was made up of; Jenny Drysdale on Josh, Rebecca Gatherum on Flick, Alastair Mckinney on Puzzle and Lucy Moffat on Travis.  The ‘B’ team was: Caitlin Wood on Dixie, Jamie Struthers on Puffin, Freddie Keith on Beano and Holly Forgan on Connie.  Most of the ‘B’ team are in the first year of Senior Games and all of them are having their first year on these ponies.  The ‘A’ team had a successful day making all finals bar one (the old sock race).  They finished 4th of 14 teams and therefore took the last qualifying place for the Zone Finals in July.  They were also one point away from qualifying for the Highland Show  - how frustrating is that!  The ‘B’ team put in a brave attempt and, although they made no finals, coped very well in the heat of a competition.  A special mention must go to Freddie Keith as he coped very well with Beano, who was finding his first competition extremely exciting, and Freddie managed to stay in the saddle during a few very scary moments! The senior results were as follows;

1st-West Perthshire (National Prince Phillip Cup Champions 2004), 48 points

2nd-Orkney, 37 points

3rd-Angus, 30 points

4th-Fife Hunt ‘A’, 29 points

5th-East Stirlingshire, 24 points

6th-Strathearn ‘A’, 21 points

7th-Strathearn ‘B’, 20 points

8th-Kincardinshire, 14 points

9th-Bennachie, 12 points

10th-Inverness, 11 points

11th-West Perthshire ‘B’, 10 points

12th= Fife Hunt ‘B’

          Orkney ‘B’, 8 points

We also had a Junior Novice team entered.  They were; Emma, Sarah and Hannah Cheape on Smartie, Sapphire and Crystal accompanied by Nicola Howat on Silver (luckily she's used to being part a large family).  They all showed they had learned a lot from the few practices they had, when they won their competition beating teams from; Angus, Bennachie, Caithness, Inverness and Strathearn.

The Junior Team consisted of; Lauren McKinney on Cinders, Daniel Wood on Tipta, Rosie Keith on Rowan, Jenny Summersgill on Shandy and Jemma Christie on Holly.  They got into two finals and did well in both of them to finish 8th out of eleven teams. The results were;

1st-Angus

2nd-Strathearn ‘A’

3rd-Orkney ‘A’

4th-Caithness

5th-Orkney ‘B’

6th-West Perthshire

7th-Bennachie

8th-Fife Hunt

9th-Strathearn ‘B’

10th= Aberdeenshire & East Stirlingshire

All the teams did very well and we would like to thank all the parents who came to help with line judging etc, as well as Chris, Susan and Catherine whose help and support was invaluable.  We couldn’t have taken part without you.  Also thank you to all those who provided ponies for others to ride, it was hugely appreciated.  Well done to everybody and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves and will come again to take part in any friendly competitions and at Blair at the end of the summer

Quiz Success.  Congratulations to our quiz team of Jacqaueline Howat, Colleen Macrae, Ruth Elliot and Caitlin Macrae who won the interbranch quiz at Auchtertool on February 19th (for the second year running), and then went on to compete in Inverness on the 12th March for the Area final.  They did well there to finish fifth with only 10 marks separating all the team scores.  The Mini team of Jemma Christie, Yvonne Howat, Catherine Macrae and Rosie Keith won their section at the interbranch quiz as well.  All those dedicated evenings of practices put in with Lyn Macrae and Gillie Keith (and Alison McRobbie) were well worth it - thanks to them for all their hard work and well done to everyone who took part.

The Kingdom Trophy was retained by Fife Hunt Pony Club on Saturday 5th March at Balcormo.  There was the usual challenging fun course to test the riding skills plus animated commentating by Sandra Low-Mitchell to challenge the nerve of the competitors.  The team of Rebecca Gatherum, Lucy Henry, Helen Summersgill and last but most importantly Gillian Osler won by a very close margin from North East Fife Riding Club.  Gillian had a very small penalty margin in hand and she rose really well to the occasion to clinch the trophy for the Pony Club again.  Emma Lawrie and Alistair McKinney got special prizes for being the only two to do double clears.

The PC Dengie Winter Show Jumping League Area 1 Final was won by Emily Keith and Gambit on Sunday 6th March at Faraway, Aberdeenshire.  What a great effort and a well deserved result after a really consistently good winter of show jumping for Emily.  The warm-up at the Kingdom Trophy must have been just what was needed!  Congratulations Emily.
