Training / Area Coaching Courses

As from 1st January 1998, every Pony Club Instructor is required to attend at least one Instructors Course (CPD) where a mounted demonstration ride is provided, every two years. This may be at Branch, Area, Regional or National Level.

The Policy of the Pony Club Council is to help provide courses of instruction at all stages for everyone who helps to teach in the Branches and Centres. This policy is implemented through the Training Committee which is responsible for the variety of courses available for CPD.  We have received feedback from some coaches that they are not always sure which course they should do, so some existing courses have been renamed, to try and make the choices clearer.  There are also some new CPD opportunities which may be of interest to your Branch or Centre:

  • Introduction to Coaching – Step 1 – Ideal for new and young coaches
  • Introduction to Coaching – Step 2 – Follow on from Step 1, and a refresher for more experienced coaches
  • NEW! Introduction to Coaching Cross Country – Step 3 – Ideal for coaches who actively coach jumping and want to start coaching cross country, or as a refresher for other coaches already coaching cross country
  • NEW! Coach Support Days - An alternative CPD refresher method which has been successfully piloted in Area 9.  For these days, a coach supporter/mentor attends a day rally, or day at camp and spends some time observing each coach and then discussing, in a supportive way, their coaching, and ways to develop and or improve themselves as a coach.  The trials in Area 9 have been extremely well received, despite a few coaches being nervous about it to begin with. Coach Support CPD Format
  • General Coach CPD update courses - It was requested that the Training Committee suggest annual themes for coach CPD.  The suggested theme for 2015 is Rider Balance, and a recommended format is available on the website, along with delivery notes for course tutors.  Balance CPD format  Balance CPD Tutor Notes

Many courses are organised on an Area basis by Area Representatives and Branches / Centres, but anyone looking for a suitable course should be made welcome in a neighbouring area.

Tickets for some of the courses listed below can be bought online: here.  Application forms for some can be found in the tabs below.  Otherwise contact details for the organiser can be found below.

BE Workshops for Coaches - Making Good Coaching Decisions

In 2014, British Eventing ran a number of regional coaching workshops which were approved for use as CPD refreshers for Pony Club coaches.  These Coaching development workshops, which were supported by Sport England, are open to Coaches of all experience, whether they are BE Accredited or not. In the mornings, the focus was on discussion, reflection and theory in a classroom-based environment, concentrating on how Coaches can make the best decisions based on the Coach’s assessment of the rider. This part of the day consisted of:

- Reviewing how a coach makes assessments
- Identifying tools and methods to make decisions more efficiently
- Identifying root causes rather than adjusting the symptoms

In the afternoon attendees took part in practical coaching sessions where all those attending were involved in coaching, observing and feedback.

How to Deliver Engaging Riding Sessions

This coaching course has been designed to help equestrian centres and equestrian coaches develop the skills needed to keep young people engaged in equestrian sport.
Ultimately, how people feel about your first few coaching sessions will ensure they keep coming back again and again to enjoy their sport. This workshop will develop your coaching skills, equipping you with the essential knowledge to ensure new participants do just that.  This course does not count as a CPD refresher for Pony Club coaches as there is no ridden demonstration, however you may still find it a useful, affordable and interesting workshop to go!

Learning Outcomes:
• Learn about new participants’ needs, including how to build their self-confidence
• Increase your knowledge about how best to meet the needs of different participant groups, helping you to recruit and retain new participants to your sessions
• Find out about the ‘C’ system of coaching and learn how to include them in your coaching through the use of practical examples
• Be able to use relevant adapted planning material for both longer-term and session planning.

Workshop dates:

Venue: Merrist Wood College, Equestrian Centre, Guildford, GU3 3PE
Date: Wednesday 18th February
Time: 18:15 - 21:15
Cost: Free
