SILVER AWARD 3

OBJECTIVES
Have a basic understanding of ponies.
Achieve confidence in handling and riding a pony.
To improve and enjoy learning about ponies.
 

RIDING AND ROAD SENSE
Be able to pass the previous tests
Mount and dismount unaided from the ground.
A correct position in the saddle.
Lengthen and shorten stirrups correctly while mounted.
Adjust girth before and while mounted.
Be able to make transitions at the markers.
Make changes of rein and circles in rising trot.
Change diagonal as necessary.
Ride over a short course of poles on the ground in walk.
Know the sequence of legs in walk.
Be able to pass the ride safely.
Know it is safer to ride on the road with adults.
Know on which side of the road you should ride
Understand a simple green cross code.
Know how to ride along a road, cross a road, and say ‘thank you’.
Know how to signal left and right
Understand how to ride on the road with a friend.
 

HORSEMASTERSHIP
Be able to pass the previous tests
Know how to brush off a pony with a dandy brush.
Be able to pick up the pony’s feet.
Be able to lead a pony in a bridle.
Be able to make the pony stand still from the ground.
Be able to tighten the girth at halt with assistance.
Name different parts of a saddle and bridle.
Be able to give a pony an apple or carrot correctly.

OBJECTIVES
Start to develop a balanced seat.
Become more involved in looking after ponies.
 

RIDING AND ROAD SENSE
Be able to pass the previous tests
Mount and dismount from either side
Sitting trot
Make changes of rein and circles in sitting and rising trot.
Be able to walk and trot in poised position over poles.
Ride over a short course of poles on the ground in trot.
Know the sequence of legs in trot.
Be able to ride as leading file.
Know it is safer to ride on the road with adults.
Know on which side of the road you should ride
Understand a simple green cross code.
Know how to ride along a road, cross a road, and say ’ thank you’.
Know how to signal left and right
Understand how to ride on the road with a friend.
Know the sequence of traffic lights
 

HORSEMASTERSHIP

Be able to pass the previous tests
Know how to use the body brush on the pony’s face, mane and tail.
Be able to pick out the pony’s feet.
Recognise different markings on the face.
Name some breeds of native ponies.
Be able to adjust the stirrups at halt.
Be able to stand the saddle on the ground correctly.
Be able to name the types of food ponies eat.
Know the difference between good and bad fences.
Know how to provide water in a field.

SILVER AWARD 1


OBJECTIVES
To be working towards developing a balanced seat independent of the reins.
Understand elementary aids and be able to apply them.
 

RIDING AND ROAD SENSE
Be able to pass the previous tests
Exercises at walk without stirrups.
Accurate transitions.
Be able to canter from the front to the rear of the ride.
Ride over a short course of poles on the ground in trot including small cross poles.
Know the sequence of legs in canter.
Be able to lead a drill ride.
Know it is safer to ride on the road with adults.
Know on which side of the road you should ride
Understand a simple green cross code.
Know how to ride along a road, cross a road, and say ’ thank you’.
Know how to signal left and right
Understand how to ride on the road with a friend.
Know the sequence of traffic lights
Recognise the dangers to ponies from cars and other traffic.
Know what weather conditions it is not safe to ride out in and how the pony may behave in bad weather.
Know what may frighten the pony and what may cause him to slip.
 

HORSEMASTERSHIP

Be able to pass the previous tests
Know the different items of grooming kit and how to use them.
Lead a pony in hand in walk and trot and turn him correctly.
Recognise different markings on the legs and body
Name all the types of native ponies.
Know the procedure for cleaning a saddle and bridle.
Put on a saddle and bridle. Know if it fits.
Recognise basic feedstuffs hay, nuts, bran, sugar beet, chaff.
Know how to give hay in the field to several ponies
Recognise some poisonous plants.
Recognise stable, sweat and turn out rugs.
