Visitors to the Royal Windsor Horse Show (9-13th May) were treated a whole host of Pony Club activities, with Mounted Games, Tetrathlon and Show Jumping taking place throughout the show.
Taking place daily, the crowd pleasing DAKS International Mounted Games culminated with the nail biting final on the Sunday, which also enjoyed the Individual Show Jumping competition, the arena jumping phase of the Tetrathlon and the presentation of the ‘Friends of DAKS’ Salver.
The DAKS International Mounted Games welcomed teams from England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and Scotland to battle it out for the converted top spot. Going into the finals on Sunday it was all to play for with double points on offer, and several teams still in contention. After eight hard fought games, including the ‘DAKS Stack’ and hysterical ‘Millk Race’, where teams were required to dress in cow costumes, the Republic of Ireland emerged victorious with 202 points. The team, trained by Chris Ahearne, comprising Peter McCarthy, 14 (Kildare Branch), Andrew Devitt, 14 (Laois Branch), Philip Wheldon, 14 (Meath Branch), Niall Hughes, 13 (Monaghan Branch), Darragh Kavanagh, 15 (Shillelagh Branch) and Molly Furlong 14 (Shillelagh Branch) received their awards from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, in the Castle Arena. Full results can be found HERE.
The long trip also proved worthwhile for Scotland as the Tetrathlon competition, held across Saturday and Sunday, saw the Scottish team of Harris Ritchie (Eglinton Hunt Branch), Martin Smith (Berwickshire Hunt Branch) and Sally Mair (Deveron Branch) taking the team honours on a score of 13811; Martin Smith was also victorious in the Individual competition taking first place on a score of 4697. Full results can be found HERE.
32 Pony Club Members from Pony Club Areas eight, 11, 12 and 13 were selected by their Area Representatives to take part in the Individual Show Jumping competition, which turned out to be a family affair as Harriet Leader-White, riding Tollamore Girl (Thetford Chase Branch), took first place honours just ahead of her sister Georgina riding Utah I. Full results can be found HERE.
This years’ very deserving recipient of the Friends of DAKS award, instigated by DAKS to recognise the many unsung volunteers who have quietly dedicated a lifetime of service and devotion within The Pony Club, was Gina Kitchener District Commissioner of the Mid Surrey Branch. Having been a Member of the Mid Surrey Branch from the age of nine, and District Commissioner since 1988, Gina’s involvement has spanned an incredible five decades and she has lead the Mid Surrey in securing a permanent venue for their activities at Walton on the Hill. The award was presented by Mr Paul Dimond, Deputy Chairman of DAKS.
A BIG Thank You to the group of Members who volunteered to groom for the Kings Troop & Household Cavalry horses, used for the Jubilee Pageant at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. They all worked their socks off, camped in very soggy conditions and still kept cheerful!
