The Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships 2013

The Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships, incorporating the disciplines of running, cross country riding, shooting and swimming, took place August 9th-11th at their new venue of Bishop Burton College, East Riding of Yorkshire; with the swim phase of the competition being held at Beverley Leisure Centre.

Over 200 Pony Club Members took part at this year’s Championships, with highlights at Open Individual level both coming from Area 6 of The Pony Club, with Jessica Varley (17), from the Burghley Hunt Branch taking the Open Girls Individual top slot a score of 4316, to receive the Helyer Challenge Cup, along with Jamie Harby (17) from the South Notts Hunt, who took the Open Boys top slot on a score of 4274 to receive the coveted Wilkinson Sword.

It was well worth the long trip for Harris Ritchie (14), from the Eglinton Branch in Ayrshire, who won the Intermediate Girls Individual on a score of 4304, and long journeys also paid off for the East Down team of Paddy Erskine (15), Ewan Findlay (15) and Andrew Turley (14), who took the Intermediate Boys Team honours on a score of 11696. The Cotley Hunt team of Mollie Hansford (15), Layla Felgate (16), Rebecca Handford (14) and Georgina Ewell (13)  were victorious in the Intermediate Girls Team section on a score of 12322 and the Open Girls Team of Steph Courty (18), Suzanne (16) and Rebecca Barwise-Munro (20) from the Percy Hunt enjoyed success with their huge score of 12254; over 2000 points ahead of their nearest rivals!

Harry Sykes (14) from the Croome Hunt Branch finished on a final score of 4600 giving him the Intermediate Individual Boys title, and the success continued for Area 9 of The Pony Club with VWH Hunt Branch Team of Toby Dibble (16) and Paddy Gilling (18) and Oliver (19) and Greg Hall (17) taking the Open Boys Team honours on a score of 11520.

“Bishop Burton proved to be a fantastic venue for our Championships” commented James Helyer, Chairman of Pony Club Tetrathlon. “The venue has provided everything we have needed and more, and a great weekend of competition has been enjoyed by everyone involved”.

The Tetrathlon Mentoring scheme, kindly sponsored by NFU Mutual and Ariat Clothing, also featured heavily once again at the Championships, after a successful launch in 2011. The scheme helps athletes perform at their best, when it matters most, through support from mentors Kate Allenby MBE, Louise Helyer, Natalya Coyle and Ryan Smith; all of whom are either ex-Olympic or World Class Pentathletes. Topics covered in the mentoring included winning habits, working with setbacks, working with nerves and being best prepared.

“We spoke to the majority of competitors at this year’s Championships” commented Kate Allenby MBE. “We are a couple of years into the scheme with Tetrathlon, and it was fantastic to see so many more competitors coming forwards from the word go to ask for mentoring, and then to see them implementing the mentor’s advice; it feels like the scheme is really making a difference!”

Pony Club Mentoring will also be available at The Pony Club Championships, incorporating Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Mounted Games and Polocrosse, held at Cholmondeley Castle, August 16-19th 2013.
