Teams Announced for Pony Club Polocrosse Home International

Teams Announced for Pony Club Polocrosse Home International

Following the successful inaugural Pony Club Polocrosse Home Nations competition in 2015, teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be returning in 2017 to compete for the coveted Triple Diamond Trophy.

The competition will take place at Celyn Polocrosse Club’s Backford grounds in Cheshire on 22nd and 23rd July 2017, and players are eligible to play for their nation based on where they live, the Branch or Centre they are a member of, where they were born or by having a parent or grandparent from that nation.

The unique format for the competition sees each Nation’s team consisting of one section of Minis, one section of Juniors and one Open section, meaning that players of all ages will take to the field during the weekend. Each section within the teams consists of three players, but with an option for Nations to select four players in each age group and swap the players in each section around between chukkas.

Each Nation will play each other once over the weekend, with each match consisting of nine chukkas of six minutes each. After each chukka the sections of the teams will change over, meaning that each of the three sections will play three chukkas in every match and get twelve minutes of rest for each six minutes of play; this structure, with built in rest periods, means that each player will only have to use one horse during the weekend.

Jan Whitehead, the Chairman of Pony Club Polocrosse, said ‘The Pony Club Polocrosse Home international is such an exciting competition with under 13yr , under 16yr and Open players competing both in their age group and then combining results to contest the Triple Diamond trophy for the overall winning nation. Well done and good luck to all those selected, I hope you enjoy and relish the experience of representing your nation in the exciting team game of polocrosse.’

The inaugural Home Nations competition proved a huge success and spectators were treated to some thrilling matches; with players and horses displaying an amazing range of skills. England emerged as the overall victors, also winning the Junior section. Northern Ireland won the Open grade and Wales took the top spot in the Mini grade.
