Quorn Hunt make it a quiz double

For the second year in a row, Quorn Hunt were crowned winners of The Pony Club National Quiz competition, with Silvermere Equestrian Centre also returning to winning ways.

Held at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre in Buckinghamshire, The Pony Club National Quiz saw 29 Branch and Centre teams from around the country test their knowledge across a wide range of equestrian topics. Rounds ranged from general Pony Club knowledge to tack and equine behaviour, as well as a picture round on poisonous plants.

Quorn Hunt had won the 2018 Branch competition by the narrowest of margins, but this year was a different story. Their team of Iola Chapman, Molly Tarris, Anna Veasey and Libby Perkes was unchanged from last year and they used this experience to power ahead of the other teams. Their final total of 274 points was over 20 ahead of runner-up West Lancashire County.

In the Centre competition, Finchale View Riding School came into the weekend as the two-time reigning champions, having won the title in both 2017 and 2018. However, their hopes of making it a triple win were dashed by Silvermere Equestrian Centre, who took the spoils with a score of 273.5 points.

Silvermere last won the competition in 2016, and two members of that team returned to lead them to victory. Georgia Stanton and Kayleigh Lubin, who were joined by new members Alicia Walden and Erin Trippit, started off strongly and led by five points at the halfway stage. They carried on this form into the afternoon and finished with an eight-point margin to Finchale View.

The National Quiz was hosted by Clare Valori, Vice Chairman of The Pony Club, who commented that ‘It was my first time as finals quizmaster. It was lovely to see so many team competitors all answering the questions so competently and with some cheery laughter thrown in.’
