Pony Club Polo Swings into Action

The first tournament was held at Hurtwood Park in Ewhurst, Surrey. This will be followed be a further eight Pony Club Polo events across the country at Vaux Park, Taunton Vale Polo Club, Ranksboro Polo Club, Rugby Polo Club, Knepp Castle, Kirtlington Park, Frampton and Haggis Farm.

The competition really begins to heat up towards the end of July where the qualifiers, held at Cirencester Park, Longdole and Tidworth Polo Club, will see teams battling it out for a place in the Audi Pony Club Championships at Cowdray Park in Midhurst, Sussex, from 5 to 7 August 2011.

“The support, which the polo clubs and grounds give to junior polo, is wonderful.  It is essential, if UK polo is to thrive in terms of numbers of players and to drive ever increasing standards of play” comments Theresa Hodges, Chairman of Pony Club Polo.

As a training organisation The Pony Club, in conjunction with the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), looks to train grassroots players to understand the basic principles of polo, including rules, riding, tactics, striking the ball and - most importantly - the welfare of ponies. Already played by over 400 young people, Pony Club Polo is designed to provide an accessible route to the adult game with the potential for members to play polo from the age of 6 to 21 on one pony.  However to cater for those who wish to progress further and to provide a further bridge into adult polo, four sections of Junior Polo, Rendell, Hipwood, Langford and Gannon, play two, three and four chukka matches needing two to four ponies per player.

Today a majority of the 50 best players in the UK played Pony Club Polo. In 2010, all the players in the Golden Jubilee Cup played Pony Club Polo, as did all the England team in the 2010 Coronation Cup – a testimony to The Pony Club training system.
