Finchale View Riding School and Cheshire Hunt North triumph at The Pony Club NFU Mutual NationalQuiz

Twenty nine teams from Pony Clubs up and down the UK gathered at Addington Manor, Buckinghamshire, on 02 April 2017 for The Pony Club National Quiz Finals, kindly supported by NFU Mutual.

A total of 116 Members took part in the final, which followed qualifiers at Area level. All were keen to demonstrate their knowledge across a range of equestrian and non-equestrian subjects to be in the running to take the Branch or Centre title in this popular annual competition.

The teams were tested on a diverse range of topics across the nine rounds

Round 1 – The Pony Club and ex Pony Club equestrian celebrities
Round 2 – Non-equine Achievement Badges
Round 3 – Competitive sports and competitions within The Pony Club
Round 4 – The Spanish Riding School
Round 5 – Practical Round – the tack room (individuals)
Round 6 – Keeping a pony at grass, worming and paddock maintenance (pairs – juniors and seniors)
Round 7 – Picture Round
Round 8 – Equestrian sports at the Olympic Games
Round 9 – Music round

This year Centres outscored the Branches, with the team from Finchale View Riding School of Esther Walker (11), Mia Tait (13), Sophie Collings (15) and Lauren Craggs (23) putting in a strong performance to win with 218.5 points, ahead of the team from Lavant House Stables who finished on a score of 209.

Finchale View Riding School Proprietor, Susan Mordey, said: “I’m really proud of the team! They worked really hard and were incredibly dedicated, even when they felt like giving up. They set themselves a goal and proved that preparation and commitment can make a huge difference.”

The Branch competition was hotly contested, but it was Cheshire Hunt North who took an early lead; topping the board at the interval then continuing to score consistently to take the win with 213 points. The runner-up spot went to the Vale of York who finished on 205.5.

The Cheshire Hunt North team, consisting of Ellie Thomas (11), Caitlin Williams (12), Hannah Pedley (13) and Georgina Hayward (24), were delighted with the win.

Georgina Hayward, who was also part of the 2007 winning Cheshire Hunt North team, said: “It’s so exciting to have won the quiz! We all can’t really believe it. It’s the first time Cailin and Ellie have been to the finals so it’s an amazing achievement for them. Hannah has been to four consecutive quiz finals so it’s great for her to finally get a win, and very well deserved.

“This is my final year as a Pony Club Member before I become too old, so I’m thrilled to go out on a high.”

Georgina went on to thank Julie Pedley and Caroline Thomas for helping them prepare for the final, and Anna Sherry and Sarah Hodgson who helped in the run up to the qualifier.  She also paid tribute to everyone from The Pony Club who ran the quiz and sponsors NFU Mutual.

Burton Hunt won the Home Made Collage or Display Competition, having spent several hours constructing a display which contained cut out photos of Branch Members taking part in Pony Club activities. These were then mounted to make the display three-dimensional, and handmade props added including mugs for the Mounted Games section and miniature show jumps. The judges thought the entry was a lovely example of hard work and a lot of thought.

Rebecca Lane, Partnerships Consultant for National Quiz sponsors NFU Mutual, said: “It was fantastic for NFU Mutual to support the National Quiz Final.  The participants showed lots of enthusiasm throughout the nine rounds, and we particularly enjoyed the creativity of the home made displays!”
