Don’t lose out after a fire or flood

Whether your home is furnished with fine antiques or a shrine to minimalist living, it’s important to insure your possessions for their full value, says Blanche Surman of rural insurer NFU Mutual.
I’ve been in farmhouses where a beautiful antique oak sideboard was used to butcher and dress geese and homes where a glass put down on a worn flat-pack coffee table leads to cries of distress. In either case, the homeowners would have been shocked to know the true value of their furniture if they had to replace it after a fire or flood.

With inflation on the rise and gold at record high prices, NFU Mutual is urging homeowners to review their home contents policy to avoid the risk of underinsurance and the hassle a major loss could cause.

As the economic climate remains challenging, NFU Mutual is concerned many homeowners could be tempted to under-estimate the value of their contents in a bid to reduce their premium and cut back on household expenditure.

Everyone’s insurance needs change over time so it’s important that people review the level of cover they have fairly regularly - at least once a year. Major life events like buying or extending a home, getting married or having a baby could affect the level of cover required, as well as inheriting or purchasing expensive jewellery, antiques or electrical equipment.

To help customers assess the level of cover they need, NFU Mutual has developed an easy-to-use online contents calculator. The tool guides homeowners through every room of the house, enabling them to add-in the value of their belongings throughout their home and provide a total sum.

Homeowners interested in calculating a more accurate figure for the value of their personal possessions can access the contents calculator by visiting www.nfumutual.co.uk.
