A WEEKEND OF ACTION AT THE AUDI PONY CLUB POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Pony Club Polo Championships, generously sponsored by Audi, took place on the 5th - 7th of August at Cowdray Park Polo Club, West Sussex.

The Championships host the annual finals for both The Pony Club Polo sections of Handley Cross, Surtees, Loriner and Rendell, as well as the Junior HPA Polo sections of Hipwood, Langford and Gannon.

170 Pony Club and Junior HPA (JHPA) players, making up 59 teams, traveled from all over the country to take part in the Championships after taking part in friendly and qualifying competitions throughout July. Pony Club Polo provides excellence in training for young players, and the progression to the adult game is clear to see with the majority of the 50 best players in the UK having started their careers in Pony Club Polo.
The finals on Sunday 5th August were as always a ‘must see’ and, as well as the best talent in polo youth, featured the fantastic parade of all Championship players to mark the beginning of the finals, which culminate with the Junior HPA Gannon section; the pinnacle of achievement for any Pony Club Polo player.

The high standard at the Championships was clear to see, yielding an incredible fourth year in a row win for the Cowdray Park JHPA Team of Jack Richardson, Charlie Scott, Guy Fox-Andrews and Freddie Horne.

In the lower sections the grassroots players battled hard, with the Handley Cross Section, where players play on their ‘Pony Club’ ponies rather than polo ponies, being won by the Cotswold Hunt Branch team of Tamara Gibbons, Patrick de Barros, Richard St Pier and Hector Chaimberlain. It was a double celebration for Hector as he also collected the coveted ‘Jambo Trophy’, awarded to the best pony/player combination who has regularly hunted and plays polo, for his pony Jerry.

The Pony Club Polo Championships have been held at Cowdray Park since 1977, and now with the support of Audi, continue to evolve to produce three days of competition that delivers true sportsmanship, real determination and above all an awful lot of Pony Club fun!
