  • B1.Working the fit horse for exercise on the lunge in a safe, efficient, effective and practical way

REQUIREMENTS

  • One horse in stable and a paddock

PADDOCK MANAGEMENT

  • B2. Avoiding worm infestation by regular picking up of droppings and topping rough patches, resting paddock or grazing with sheep or cattle.
  • B3. Checking for poisonous plants, shrubs or trees.
  • B4. Precautions necessary during and after use of sprays, fertilisers, lime, etc.

MARES AND FOALS

  • B5.Candidates are expected to know the principles of the care of brood mares and the handling of foals and youngstock
    • Examiners will probably ask Candidates about the following:
    • Selection of brood mare and of stallion.
    • Choice of service date - basic outline of covering programme.
    • Foaling environments, facilities and equipment;  selection, preparations and procedures.
    • Care of the in-foal mare, including feeding, worming and testing routines.
    • Precautionary measures, e.g. tetanus and influenza.
    • Signs of mare about to foal.
    • What to watch out for when mare is foaling.
    • Deciding factors on whether to return mare to stud;  procedures then necessary.
    • Travelling mares and foals.
    • Weaning;  when and how.
    • Gelding colts;  advantages and disadvantages.
    • Care of young stock.
    • How to cope with basic problems which may arise at any time with mares, foals or youngstock and know when to call the veterinary surgeon
