TEAM NEWS - SUMMER 2009

The Portman have had a very good Summer with some excellent results.  The Area competitions started with the Area Dressage which until Rachel took over we never even entered a team for.  Laura Hudson was the star of the day finishing 3rd in her section and only just missing qualifying for the Championships.  Some of the other Portman members also rode lovely tests some not so lovely.  Two of the Junior riders were also placed in their sections Emily Kendall and Emma Hamilton.

Rose Yeatman, Sophia Jenkinson, Laura Hudson, Anne Bolton, Eloise Towning, George Bingham, Charlotte Bingham, George Bolt, Emily Kendall, Emma Hamilton

Area Show Jumping came next in appalling conditions at Wincanton Racecourse. The Portman fielded two Intermediate Teams and 2 Novice Challenge teams.  All 4 teams coped really well in the terrible wet conditions.  The Novice Challenge teams provided two  individual placings with Amelia Allen finishing 6th and Anna Poe 10th.  This was a huge achievement as there were well over 100 competitors.

The big success of the day was one of the Intermediate Teams achieving our DC's ambition of getting a team to the Championships.  The Team of Rose Yeatman, Meredith Holmes, Eloise Towning and George Bingham won the Intermediate team competition out of 25 teams, George was 5th indvidually.

Rose Yeatman, Meredith Holmes, Eloise Towning, George Bingham, Laura Hudson, Charlotte Bingham, Miranda Sunnucks & Minna Henderson. Xavier Vrigneau, Jack Morant, Johanna Reimann-Dubbers, Katie Miskin, Sophie Langham, Anna Poe, Amelia Allen and Holly Druce.

Area Eventing -

The team were in positive form going to Moreton where we had one Junior Team, one Novice Challenge Team, and two Intermediate Teams.  The Novice Challenge team of Johanna Reimann-Dubbers, Jack Morant, Anna Poe and Xavier Vrigneau were brilliant in all jumping double clears which is a fantastic achievement and put the team in 10th place.  Johanna was placed individually, and Sophie Langham rode really well as in individual for the Portman.  The Juniors, Holly Frizzle, Lara Morant, Isabella Fairhurst and Emma Hamilton all rode really well on the Sunday.  Well done in particular to Emma and Lara for their lovely double clears.  Also on the Sunday were the Intermediate teams and individuals.  Poor Miranda Sunnucks had to withdraw as she was still too sore to ride following a nasty fall at camp.  Sadly Rose also had to withdraw as Omni was lame as she warmed up for their dressage.  It did mean that George was saved as he had forgotten his girth and was able to borrow Rose's.  The two teams and the one remaining invidual, Minna Henderson, all did brilliantly.  We had two team all going clear cross country, with good dressage and show jumping performances.   Sadly we did not get a team placing due to cross country time faults, but Minna did really well to finish 6th, Polly 7th, Charlotte 10th and George only missed qualifying by 0.4 finishing =2nd on 30.  The teams now need to learn to ride accordingly for the cross country times.  The Portman at all events win the most supportive branch, the members are all brilliant at supporting their team mates.

Rose Yeatman, Meredith Holmes, Eloise Towning, George Bingham, Laura Hudson, Polly Hancock, Charlotte Bingham, Sophia Jenkinson, Miranda Sunnucks & Minna Henderson. Xavier Vrigneau, Jack Morant, Johanna Reimann-Dubbers,  Sophie Langham, Anna Poe, Isabella Fairhurst, Emma Hamilton, Lara Morant and Holly Frizzle.

Area TetrathalonAnother great achievement for Xavier.  Xavier won the Area 14 Intermediate individual title qualifying him for the Chamionships at Hartpury College.  He put in another fantastic performance finishing 5th individually out of over 60 competitors from the whole of the UK including Ireland.  Xavier now aims for the Open Area next year and we must get a team together from the Portman to go and support him, as well as encouraging our younger Tetrathalon competitors coming up through the levels.  Please click here to See Xavier's report on the Nationals.

Junior Show Jumping

A Junior team of Henry and Charlie Mayo, Isabella Fairhust and Jessica Rowling went all the way to Chippenham on 25th August for the Area 14 Junior Show Jumping.  With the 2nd round at 2'9'' most of the team were having to jump their biggest ever course and they managed it in style.  With three of the team jumping double clears the team finished on 0 penalties - which is a fantastic achievement.

Summer 2008 News

Xavier Competes in the National Pentathalon

On the last weekend of the Summer holidays Xavier Vrigneau competed in the British youth pentathlon  at Solihull; at 14  he is eligible for youth group c  but  his coach had entered him in the group above which was twice as demanding and meant he was competing against many of the GB team !

20 shots , 2000m run, 200m swim , and 20 fencing bouts later he had 15 minutes to warm up a strange horse and then  entered the SJ arena and rode an impeccable round  ( thank heavens for Portman pony club camp ! ),

So currently he lies 8th in the country with 2 more years ahead of him in that group.

Senior Training

We had a very successful three days for the senior members.  On the first day which was organised by Clare Hundley the riders watched some serious dressage at the Regional Dressage Finals at Kingston Maurwood and then went on to have a flatwork lesson with Clare.  The following two days was very exciting as we were really lucky to have Stephen Hadley, retired leading show jumper and British team trainer, giving a two day clinic.  The riders and horses all benefitted hugely.

Area Tetrathalon

We start the Summer with an Area Win

Congratulations to Xavier Vrigneu who put in an amazing performance to win the Junior Boys Area Tetrathalon in Cornwall on the 12th July. Sadly the Juniors do not go on to the Nationals. Though Xavier is young enough to compete in the Junior section again next year her is going to move up to the Intermediate section next year. Xavier is shortly going to the National Pentathalon Championships where he came 11th last year and is hoping to improve on that amazing result this year. We all wish him good luck.

Area Dressage

The Portman went all the way to Bristol with 4 teams for the Area Dressage. Considering last year was the first time the Portman have put forward a team, managing to put together 4 teams was a feat in itself. Everyone had worked really hard with their dressage over the months leading up to the holidays under the great guidance of Clare Hundley. We are really lucky to have an instructor of Clare's calibre on our committee and really dedicated to helping our branch. Though we did not have a winning team we had two very good individual placings with Katt Reimann-Dubbers 5th in her section and Theresa Reimann-Dubbers 3rd in her section.

Area Show Jumping

ONLY ONE PLACE OFF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Portman for the second year running were one place off qualifying for the National Championships. Three teams went all the way to the Syston for the Area 14 Show Jumping competition. Everyone jumped well over some very difficult courses. The team of Annabel Mains, Rose Yeatman, Meredith Holmes and George Bingham managed to go into the final round having brilliantly jumped double clears, an achievement which was only matched by two other teams. Unfortunately the other two teams managed to just get ahead in the jump off for us to finish 3rd overall, with Annabel coming 6th individually. The teams were as follows;-

Novice Challenge

Xavier Vrigneau, Eloise Towning,  Jessica Kenyon

Intermediate 3rd

Annabel Mains 6th, Rose Yeatman, Meredith Holmes, George Bingham

Intermediate

Miranda Sunnucks,  Izzie SunnucksCharlotte Bingham

Area Eventing

We like most pony clubs had a mixed day at Aldon for the Area 14 eventing. We fielded a Junior team, a Novice Challenge team and an amazing feat in itself 3 Intermediate teams. Aldon proved to be a very testing course for all classes. The Juniors had a couple of slight mishaps, but with Johanna Reimann-Dubbers putting in a brilliant performance to come 3rd individually. The Novice team was really unlucky to lose Eloise Towning from the team as her pony was lame. The Intermediate and Novice challenge riders all had some trouble with the testing cross country course, and sadly we did not manage to meet our DC's dreams of getting a team to the championships. Lucy Bowes the mainstay of the Portman eventing team put in a really impressive performance with a fantastic clear cross country to finish 8th individually. George Bingham was thrilled to be 6th individually in his section and Annabel Mains was unlucky to be out of the placings in her section where she finished 9th.
