HEALTH & SAFETY
Health & Safety

We try to make our rallies and events as much fun as possible, but equestrianism can be a dangerous sport and accidents can happen.  To make things as safe as possible for everyone concerned, can you PLEASE note the following safety points:

  • DO NOT leave your horse or pony tied to your trailer or lorry unattended.
  • Always WALK your pony back to your trailer.
  • Leave as much space as is feasible between vehicles when parking. Sometimes this is not possible depending on venue, but do take this into consideration.
  • NEVER sit on your pony without your riding hat on and ensure that it is properly fastened.
  • BEWARE of pushchairs, small children and other people in all riding areas - they may not be able to get out of a horse's way.
  • PLEASE keep all dogs on a short lead.
  • REMEMBER horses and ponies are unpredictable animals and every care must be taken to be responsible at Pony Club events.

Hats
Please check hats regularly for signs of damage. If there is cracking or compression of the foam please get a new one.

IMPORTANT, please check that hats conform to the latest regulations re kite marks. Details are given in the rule books for all disciplines.   All hats must bear the CE mark and one of the following symbols -

  • BSI kitemark
  • Snell E2001 with number
  • SAI Global symbol

Before you can ride at any Pony Club activity or competition, your hat must be tagged to show it conforms to current Pony Club standards.  If you require your hat to be checked and tagged please contact GAYNOR GRAHAM to arrange this.

Clothing
Pony Club sweatshirt with Pony Club polo shirt OR Hacking/Show jacket with white shirt and Pony Club tie.  Beige, cream, navy or black jodhpurs.  Brown or black jodhpur boots, matching half chaps (no fringes) or gaiters if desired, or long riding boots.  No muckers!   No jewellery except watches.   Hair should be contained in a hair net.   Gloves to be black, brown, navy or cream.  If weather is bad, wear a plain dark-coloured waterproof jacket.

Tack
Should be clean and in good condition - no loose stitching - and be a good fit.   Martingales need rein stoppers and a stopper where the martingale meets the neck strap.  Stirrups must be the correct size for the rider’s foot, i.e. with a gap either side of the boot.  Reins must not be so long that they hang in a loop near the rider’s foot.  Spurs can only be worn with the DC's permission except for members who have passed their B test.

Cross Country rallies/training/competitions
Back Protectors should be worn for all cross-country events.  MEDICAL ARMBANDS are compulsory at all Cross Country competitions. You will not be allowed to compete without wearing an armband. Fences should not be climbed when course walking.

Horse passports
All horse owners must carry the equine passports with them when they travel and failure to do so is not only breaking the law but is also likely to incur a hefty fine. The passports MUST stay with the horses when travelling.

Spectators
Would all spectators at PC rallies and events please keep at a safe distance.  We understand that you want to watch your child, but keeping everyone safe is a major concern, especially at cross country rallies.  Parents, please keep your spectating children out of harm's way and under your watchful eye.  If possible, keep to a fence line and be aware of the activity of other rides around you.
