PONY CLUB ‘A’ TEST PASS RATE UP!
The Pony Club ‘A’ Test has enjoyed a really successful year with one third of candidates taking the
Test achieving a pass.
The ‘A’ Test is a prestigious award, which is passed by a handful of Pony Club Members each year
and is on a level with the BHS stage IV riding and horse care exam.
Candidates have to ride a number of unknown horses on the flat, over show jumping and cross-
country fences during the exam, as well as demonstrating a practical knowledge of lungeing to
improve a horse's way of going and training young horses.
Successful candidates for 2008 are: Charlie Knapp (Woodland Hunt), Robyn Waterson and Alice
Greenwood (Cattistock Hunt), Eleanor Barrett (Clifton on Teme Hunt),
Joanna Honey (Garth Hunt),
Ben McClumpha (Atherstone Hunt) and Emily Wotton (Tiverton Hunt). Sarah Parkes
(Worcestershire Hunt) passed the A Test with Honours, the only candidate to do so in 2008.
Five A Tests were held in total this year at Huntley School of Equitation and Talland School of
Equitation.
Ben McClumpha passed the A Test on his first attempt this autumn and when asked about the
experience commented “The A Test day was both physically and mentally demanding but well
worth all the work” “The whole experience was really good and I really enjoyed the chance to ride
all of the different horses”. Ben, who has followed The Pony Club Test route all the way up from D
to A Test level is currently based with event rider Piggy French and plans to continue his riding as
a career.
Eleanor Barrett, who also passed on her first attempt, was ‘thrilled to pass the Pony Club 'A' Test!’
Eleanor commented that ‘all the examiners were very friendly and gave good feedback at end of
day. I am glad that I put myself forward to take the test, as it feels such an achievement and I
would recommend it to anyone who wants to pursue a career in the equine world’.
Alice Greenwood and Robyn Waterson’s passes for the Cattistock Hunt makes up part of a
remarkable record for Area 14 of The Pony Club, as they enjoy their fifth pass in just four years
with four of the passes coming from the Cattistock Hunt Branch!
