From 1 February all XC Technique rallies will be £22 and XC Schooling rallies £28
The first xc technique rally went very well helped along by the unexpected good weather, this is not always the case so be prepared to wrap up well. If the weather is horrendous there is the possibility of cancellation but I prefer not to.
The technique rallies do fill up quickly and they are aimed at a more confident level, Kathryn Leech is organising rallies through Jan & Feb using some of the technique fences and they may be more suited to the less ambitious partnerships. If you are not sure give me a call.
Throughout the year there are several competitions the branch sends teams to if you are interested in being considered for a team could you let me know by e-mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). I will also want to know your:
Level of ability (Novice Challenge, Intermediate, Open)
Past competition experience & results
How long you have had your present pony
What your aims are for the year ahead
Height of Pony/Horse and age
As with any potential team members it is necessary to see them at some of the xc rallies on offer so I can assess their level of riding and hopefully guide them in the right direction.
It is not enough these days just to have a pony that can do xc, the standard is very high throughout the P.C., both show jumping and especially dressage have a huge influence on the final results. The East Cheshire put on lots of rallies for all these disciplines and it helps in the selection process if you have attended the dressage & show jumping as well as the xc rallies. That said you cannot beat getting out and gaining competition experience. You need to keep an eye on the Area 5 website and individual Pony Club websites for suitable competitions.
There is always British Eventing but this can sometimes be very expensive and you need to look carefully as to how many competitions you would be able to go to, again give me a call for any advice.
I have covered a lot on potential team competitors but the rallies are also for anyone wanting more xc experience whether it is for tetrathlon or just fun so choose the correct height for you and your pony’s ability. More information on your slip is better than none, also remember a 3’ cross country fence is much larger than a show-jump, particularly if its placed on a hill or in front of water!
Boring stuff – remember, if you are wanting to go to Pony Club events, get the relevant rule book and least give it a glance rules change, too late when you have had an entry turned down or are eliminated for something that could have been avoided.
Cross country can be slippery, it is not on an all weather surface so stud holes in shoes in preparation for the spring training and events is a good idea - if you don’t need them fine but they are there if you do. Again check your hat and body protector are up to standard as well as your tack.
