This summer was very quiet competition wise, with wet weather cancellations and changes of mounts. Becky Smallman was the only member out competing. Thanks to Cathy Kavanagh kindly lending her wonderful horse ‘Ed’, Becky won the Intermediate at the New Forest.

The Area qualifier was held in Truro, a long journey, which was rewarded by coming a brilliant third and qualifying for the Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships at Hartpury. Becky was then selected to join the Southern Team for the UK Regional Championships at Wincanton (next year it’s in Scotland!) at Open level. This meant that she could not drop back a level to do the Intermediate at Hartpury.

For the UK Regional Championships Becky was lucky to be lent another wonderful HUGE horse called Harry, owned by the Sharmans, found by Debbie Pinfield. Having only ridden Harry once the night before, Becky managed a clear over a 1.10 m championship cross country course which was a great achievement. She learnt a lot by competing at such a high level and hopes to qualify as an individual in the PC Open in 2009.

I was very encouraged by the numbers of new members who came shooting at the last practise, 13 in all, a record ! Some excellent scores were achieved, so it will be great to get some teams to the triathlons over the winter. A BIG thank you to the Bartletts for the use of Smythwyck for all our training. Hope to see you all again at the next shooting session.
