SHOW JUMPING REPORT 2009

Area Show Jumping took place on Wincanton Racecourse on what must have been the wettest day of the year!

The Novices were first to go and probably got the best of the weather. In the first round, both teams produced lovely clears, but the second round caught a few out and Sophie Andrews and Alicia Bouch were the only two who finished on double clears. Alicia then went on to finish 7th individually overall which was a fantastic achievement.

The Intermediate team of Michael Smyth, Cesci Addis, Charlie Lanz and Jess Chivers all went really well over challenging courses, especially in the second round when the ground was quite cut up and slippery, to finish a well-deserved fourth

We managed to enter two Open teams which was fantastic and they all jumped very well. David Doel, Imogen Mercer, Ellie Still and Charlie Addis ended up jumping off against the Cattistock for a team place at  the Championships, sadly they ended up second. However David won and Charlie was third so securing individual places at the Champs. Toby Bevins,Yoyo Edwards and Frankie Price all had a few minor mistakes so their team finished fifth.

Junior Area was run at Abbottswood later on in August and we had five teams entered!

The Badminton team (Jonty Bevins, Katie Bastable, Lizzie Van Tromp, Elena Palmer) lead the day, never an easy task, but they all jumped well except for Elena who’s pony wasn’t very helpful to her. The second team to go was the Gatcombe team ( Sasha Cook, Katherine Lambert, Evie Staff, Katie Smyth) all rode magnificiently and ended up third. The Burghley team (Gemma Thorpe, Grace Brown, Caitlin Lennard, Talullah Bartlett) were all doing an area competition for the first time and the Hartpury team (Sarah Pinfield, Ruby Brown, Bonnie Bartlett, Sophie Andrews) went on to win.The last team to go was the Blenheim team (Bella Brown, Emma Pinfield, Kirstie Johnson, Kirsten McFaull) and they rode for their lives making a very exciting finish but just touched a couple of poles, however they won the Turnout Competition. Katie Smyth was a very creditable 5th individually out of 50 in the jump off. Well done to all who took part, and thank you to all who helped make the day so successful.

Off to the Championships in Derbyshire went Charlie and David (with Sophie Arundel who was doing the dressage) and the normal entourage of Grannies, Dads, boyfriends, dogs etc. Everyone had a very enjoyable BBQ the night before.

The courses were big and technical: if you rode correctly you got a clear! Both David and Charlie were clear in the first round, but David had a very annoying first fence down in the second.

There were four in the third round jump-off against the clock and Charlie had the bad luck to be drawn first to go. However she set the standard of a fast clear that no-one could beat. It was a very impressive bit of riding and meant she became Pony Club Open Individual Show Jumping Champion. David came a very respectable sixth. As the head of Show Jumping at Pony Club HQ remarked to me: ‘ two in the top six…. very impressive Mrs Bromfield!’

Well done everyone!
