SHOW JUMPING REPORT 2008

We have held many training sessions with our trainer, Anne Newbery, over the year. These are always well attended and enjoyed by all. We have used the facilities at Lackham for some years but with the closure of equine courses there we won’t be able to use them next year. Any ideas of arenas we could use, they need to be quite big and have parking, and be geographically convenient, please speak to me.

Hickstead & Gatcombe

A team consisting of Charlotte Adderley, Hannah Chase, Ellie Still and Charlotte Addis jumped in the pony Club class at Hickstead. We were the first team to jump at 8.30am and finished on a score of 12, which was not quite good enough for the jump off.

Then it was off to Gatcombe with Imogen Mercer, Alex Hamilton White, Yoyo Edwards and Hannah Chase. This is such fun, but a long day especially if you do well in the first round. Our team were one of the only 3 teams which ended on a clear score after one round, so were nearly last to jump in the afternoon. Sadly things didn’t go according to plan and despite some good rounds we were unplaced.

Area Show Jumping

Area Show jumping was run by the Syston at Leyland Court . Our Open team was Frankie Price, Yoyo Edwards, Ellie Still and Charlotte Addis all of whom jumped well and finished 2nd. This was not a qualifying result, but due to a technical error by the winning team and some erratic judging, it was decided to allow them to go to the championships. Sadly for Frankie, Bert got a virus so David Doel stepped in at the last minute. It was very big and technical, a typical show jumper’s course which is testing for eventers! However everyone did well, learnt a lot and wants to qualify again in 2009.

The Intermediate team of Alice Manister, Beth Stoneham, Charlotte Gould and Jess Chivers had to jump three rounds and, in spite of a few heart stopping moments from Jess, they came a magnificent 2nd and were off to the champs. Beth won the individual with a stunning jump off on her ever reliable piebald Maximillion. The team surpassed themselves at the Championships by being 6th in the Tack and Turnout competition (rather a surprise !!) and then going on to be a magnificent 4th in the jumping.

There were two National Novice teams with Madeleine Barr, Lucy Grimshaw, Becky Deal, Katie Ebbs, Cesci Addis, Libby Seed, Sarah Pinfield and Sophie Andrews .They all went very well especially as some of them are still juniors and were there for experience. Madeleine jumped a lovely double clear and an enormous jump off to come 2nd and to qualify for the Championships. Sadly her pony decided it was too big up there, but we had a lovely time in Cheshire (where the National Novice Championships are held) with the dressage team having a delicious BBQ and sleeping in tents!

Junior Show Jumping at Larkhill was beautifully run by the RA. The Red team ( Katie Smyth, Libby Seed, Sarah Pinfield, Sophie Andrews) jumped really well to finish 3rd and 2nd in the Turnout. The Blue team ( Antonia Riley, Brooke Henley, Bonnie Bartlett, Jonty Bevins) came close to the green finishing 5th and 4th in the Turnout. The Green team (Elena Palmer, Emily McKeown, Sasha Cook, Beau Carrel) all did well but weren’t quite on form on the day, however they stayed and cheered the other teams on.

I would like to thank Anne for all her hard work and support, especially at competitions when her knowledge is invaluable, particularly when rules have to followed!

We are having some Avon Vale discs made to be worn on white square numnahs at team competitions. If you are jumping in an Avon Vale show jumping team you are entitled to wear them for the day. I hope they will be ready for the Jumping and Style Competition at half term. For Team Polo Shirts see Gen Info.
