DRESSAGE REPORT 2009
Training sessions started in January this year with keen interest and nearly all sessions full. It soon became clear that we had a strong contingent of “Junior” riders – with a few gaps in numbers for the other teams. This was borne out when it came to our Area Competition – where there was strong competition for the Junior/Novice Challenge teams.
For the early July Area Dressage we sent one team at both Open and Intermediate levels along with several Junior and Novice Challenge teams. The star of the Open class was Sophie Arundel on her eventer April Bloom Clover who won her section to qualify for the National Champs – where she put up a solid performance to be 8th. The rest of the team, David Doel with Emily and Jessica Waldron put in reliable performances for the team to be 3rd.The Intermediate Team were all fairly new to competing at this level. Tom Vacher rode his eventing mare to 3rd place and a Championship qualification. Unfortunately he was unable to take this up. With Lucy Grimshaw, Molly Manister and Charlie Lanz clocking up two more 3rd placings between them, the team also emerged a very creditable 3rd.The
National Novice teams shone for us this year, coming equal 2nd. Libby Seed, Antonia Riley, Sophie Andrews and Sarah Pinfield scored the same points as our other team of Jonty Bevins, Sophie Gregory, Hattie Lanz (who won her section) and Emily Mckeown. The upshot of this was that they all headed up to Cheshire over the August Bank Holiday to the Novice Championships. Sarah Pinfield, going early in the competition, nerve-wrackingly held on to first place throughout the morning to win her section. A fantastic result for her and the Avon Vale PC. The remaining team members all put in good performances, without quite managing to “raise their game” to the high standard required for the top placings. A great fun competition to go to – will have inspired all to have another go at getting to a Championships next year! The Junior teams were equally strong this year. Our teams were placed 1st, 4th and 8th. With Ruby Brown, Emma Pinfield (1st in section) , Kirstie Johnson (2nd) and Bonnie Bartlett (6th) heading the large class of Junior Dressage riders. To have all three teams highly placed was brilliant – and bodes well for the future of the AVH PC Dressage. Not to be totally outdone by our Juniors, a “Senior” team of Danielle Arundel, Jessica Waldron and Grace Warden starred at the
Badminton Summer Dressage Championships. They were overall winners of the Team event – a “first” for the Avon Vale. Well done to you all.Why not come to the dressage rally at Christmas? You could be part of a team in 2010! Maggie Doel
