The winners of the Pony Club Mounted Games competitions from Areas 1,2,and 19 came to Doune for the Zone Finals. It was a beautiful day and all those who took part would like to thank the West Perthshire Branch for running the competitions.
In the senior competition, the Eglinton A team won and will go forward to the HOYS final of the Prince Philip Cup. The second team, from the West Perthshire Branch will go to the Pony Club Championships at Sansaw. There they will play against the runners-up from the other Zone Finals for the last place at HOYS. The third team, from Kirkintilloch and Campsie will also go to Sansaw for the B competition.
A team from the Percy Hunt Branch took first place in the junior competition, closely followed by one from the Eglinton and then one from Cleveland. They all go forward to further competitions at Sansaw.
Before both competitions, marks were awarded for Tack and Turnout. The judges were pleased to see the high standard of turnout of both rider, tack and ponies. First in the seniors were Morpeth, then Lanark and Upperward, followed by Orkney. The best turned out juniors came from the Percy Hunt, then the Eglinton and then the team from the Cleveland.
For all Pony Club members and their families, the day was the end of an era. Ted Hunter was making his last official appearance in Scotland as Chief Steward, after 39 years. He started as trainer for the Angus Team and took them to HOYS on more than one occasion. Since then he has played an important role as a member of the Pony Club Mounted Games Committee, as well as officiating at Games competitions up and down the country. He will be very sadly missed.
Teams and individuals from the Pony Club in Scotland marked his retiral by presenting a quaich - The Ted Hunter Trophy - which will be awarded to the Best Scottish Mounted Games Team at the Zone Finals. Everyone was pleased that Ted's wife and daughters were there to see it being handed over to the first winners from the Eglinton Branch. Ted was also presented with a small figurine of a Pony Club member playing the Stepping Stone race, suitably clad in a red Angus sweatshirt.
Congratulations to all those who passed tests during 2007. You have all worked hard to pass your test and I hope you will start work for the next one.
Our highest achiever is Olivia Haddow from the Lanark and Renfrew Branch. She is one of only five people in the country who have passed their Pony Club A Test this year.
