This is an affordable local opportunity for those who need to sit the
certificate.
As you are probably aware, by the end of April 2008, everyone who transports
horses or ponies by road over 65kms in connection with 'economic activity'
must sit a "Certificate of Competency".
Everyone transporting any livestock by road over 65kms has to sit the
certificate - for equestrian purposes you only need to acquire the
certificate if your journey is commercial in nature.
If you transport equines by road, by lorry or trailer, over a distance of
more than 65kms in connection with trade or business then you must attain
this certificate in order to keep yourself on the correct side of the law.
That means that if you are a professional rider transporting someone else's
horse, or if you transport equines for reasons associated with a riding
school or other business, or if you deal in equines, or transport them for
breeding purposes then you need to attain this certificate.
If you are a leisure or sporting rider transporting your own or a member of
the family's horses or ponies for purposes of leisure, competition or
training then you DO NOT NEED to attain this certificate.
The certificate takes the form of online assessment that has to be sat on a
laptop linked to the NPTC, there are 27 multiple choice questions and each
certificate is species specific.
BHSS has teamed up with the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) in Scotland
to facilitate people who need to attain the equine certificate.
Through the BWMB we can facilitate you accessing the certificate for the
competitive price of £47, (for a further £27 you can sit a second species
certificate at the same time - the others being cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry
and game birds.) The BWMB will collect applications from a dozen people in
your area then invite you to sit the test at a local venue. The test takes
approximately an hour (although most people are finished within 45 minutes.)
How do I start the application process?
To Apply please send a large SAE to me at the BHSS address below and I will
send you the appropriate registration form which you will return, along with
your cheque payable to BWMB and a passport photograph of yourself, to the
BWMB at an address that you will be provided with.
I hope this is helpful, I know this is a really competitive price and we are
delighted that BHSS has been able to team up with the BWMB on this matter.
If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them.
